If people perform well in their job, they normally hope/expect to be rewarded for this with more pay. Why would rugby league players be any different? If you let them go, you're accused of having no ambition, if you keep them on and pay them more, you're accused of not using the money to sign XYZ and of having no ambition. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
If/when we can operate at or near to the full cap, then we can rightly raise our expectations. As it is, if you look at the quality of the signings we've made so far (based on reputation, of course) and the players we've managed to retain, I'd say we've done pretty well to this point in time, given the prevailing circumstances.
