I have watched this video a few times now and something was really bugging me.
Not the drink driving, that's bad but the penalties are in place to deal with it. I get the drink driving, I don't do it but when I was in my mid 20 (pre kids) my own interpretation of DD was somewhat loose though never as loose as this. He deserves all he gets and possibly more.
No what bothers me is what he did next. In an attempt to get away with it he makes a cowardly attempt to hide his guilt by getting in the back seat and I assume pretend he wasn't driving. Most DD offenders at least have the decency to hold their hands up and take it like a man or woman.
Not Smith though, and this explains a lot as to why such an obvious talent has so often failed to deliver on the pitch when needed. This explain to me at least why Smith was never a great RL player or the answer to our problems.
My old mate Belly (and yes he is a mate of mine believe it or not) used to say that we had a dumb team because they wouldn't follow Smith around. This is not a dig at Belly because despite me not being quite as big a fan of Smith than he I did broadly agree. Yet this video makes it clear what a selfish and gutless individual this bloke is. He's no team player and isn't someone you'd want next to you in the trenches. This mentality must have been obvious to many of his team mates and must have transferred onto the pitch. To me at least it's obvious now why perhaps a large number of his team mates were perhaps not happy to follow someone who clearly lacks any kind of leadership qualities needed and as I say is IMO the definition of a "non team player" if that makes sense.
I don't buy this all RL are gladiators claptrap and certainly don't buy the role model stuff. RL like all team sports is a mix and RL has it's fair share of reprobates. However most get the idea of being a team player and having a modicum of honour and decency. What I suspect is that the one thing RL players can't forgive is a lack of guts, something Smith has occasionally shown IMO. What he did in this video is the ultimate expression of this personality flaw.
Smith did some great stuff every now and then and it would be churlish to deny it. It's equally unfair to damn him completely as most of us are flawed - however his particular flaw marks him as unfit for the job he held and it's a shame it wasn't more obvious sooner.
I wish Tim the best and hope he defeats his demons before someone really gets hurt - but he'll need to find far more courage than displayed on that video. Tim you're a bell end but you can improve like we all can - oh, and you won't find the answer in a bottle I'm afraid.
So ends the sermon
