| Whilst much has been said about this whole sorry episode and its effects on the club, the game as a whole and Newton's future (or lack of) in the game, little has been said as to why he did it.
When it was announced that Newton was joining Wakey there was a lot of reservations expressed on this board. He was coming off the back of an injury-ridden season, many Bulls fans were critical of his performances, his commitment and desire, McNamara was happy to let him go. John Kear showed faith in him and brought him to club and, because of that, most fans were prepared to reserve judgement.
Clearly Newton had no intentions of living of his past glories and seeing out his remaining playing days taking it easy (as some inferred). In order not to disappointment his new coach, club and fans he was prepared to take a very dangerous and foolish gamble and cheat. Fortunately, for the good of the game he was caught, but when we look back on Terry Newton's very brief time at the club we should at least feel that he had come here intending to give his all for Wakey

You are presuming he had never took that gamble before.
Sorry, but i dont buy it for one minute, that he did it so as not to disappoint his new coach, club and fans.IMO the only person he was interested in not disappointing was himself,by cheating.
So,i wont look back at his time at Wakefield feeling he intended to give his all for Wakey --- I will look back at his time here,as a player that would go to any lengths, including cheating,to preserve and prolong his career, purely out of self interest.
I will look back on his time here,as the player that got our club bad publicity.
I will look back on his time here,as the player that took the shine off an excellent start to the season.
I will look back at his time here,as the player that left our squad short in numbers.

| What's your opinion on how the Club should react now Terry Newton has admitted his guilt via the solicitors statement? What should Trinity do to try and repair the reputation of the club, bearing in mind instead of the press, etc. talking about Trinity's great start to the season and the win over the Whinos, its just all about "Drugs cheat Newton"? Do we keep a dignified silence or do we issue a statement, condemning the use of banned substances for whatever reason - zero tolerance, etc. and do we tear up Newton's contract?

It's Terry Newton's situation and reputation not the clubs, he was the one who took a banned substance. As to his contract if he gets a 2 year ban which is likely then of course we should tear his contract up as he has made himself unavailable for work.

That sounds about right, he's brought it on himself and i'm sure he would agree with your post.

I agree wholeheartedly that it's Newtons problem and he has been incredibly stupid, or at best niaive, and he's the one that should face the consequences, but we all know certain bits of the media seem to love nothing more than to have a go - we have seen all the qotes about "Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Terry Newton tests positive ........." etc. etc. - and in some peoples eyes Trin will be implicated and mud sticks - which is wrong but can happen to a team when the fault is an individuals. We've already read and heard silly comments like "Trin ought to be docked the points they won when Newton was in the team".
I just was asking what everyone thought the Trinity management ought to do, if anything, to stress their disapproval of what's happened. I tend to agree with other posters - cancel his contract but as he has now actually admitted taking something he shouldn't, do they take a stand now or wait until the formal ban if it comes?

| I really don't think, other than muppets on here and in real life, that any mud will stick to Trinity. It didn't with other clubs when Hock/Hudson/Bloem were banned.

| Unfortunately we are directly linked to the actions of one of our employees, it's how it goes.
I am 100% sure he isn't the first (he may be the first caught!!) and he won't be the last!!!
The amount spent on catching cheats, is far less than the amount spent not only on the drugs but on the drugs to hide the drugs.
All profesional athletes under contract should be tested by whatever means at whatever notice, our game should make a stand against these people.
I'm sure that wada, would be delighted that a game such as ours would be prepared to have all our players tested, to make a stand if you like, but I bet you any money you like there would be certain players and even certain clubs that would not be up for it!! Who knows that may even include our players or our club????

A very well written reflection on the 'human' aspect of this unfortunate tale. Yes it has, in a very small way, tarnished the reputation of our club, but we will rapidly recover. Newton will not recover so quickly having said goodbye to his career.
It is worth remembering that RL players are not well paid for a short career and a dangerous profession. We stand week in and week out screaming for them to run faster and hit harder and recover quicker. I don't think Terry Newton would be my type of person to be honest, I wasn't pleased he was coming to us. I do however, have enough experience of life not to sit in judgement.
The bloke cheated (to extend his career). He got caught. A fairly common human story.

| I think supporters of all colours will realise that it is the individuals responsibility for what they take, not the clubs. To blame a club is wrong. Simple.

I dont think that any of the so called Wakey muppets on here will blame the club for Newton's indiscretions.

| I can't believe that some people are praising Newton for holding his hands up and being honest. He was only honest after he was caught! I hope he gets the full 2 year ban and the club then take similar action to what Chelsea did with Mutu.

I hope they don't. I hope they do whatever's now necessary to terminate his contract and end their association with the player in a dignified manner. The club needs to concentrate on more important things, like the next franchise application, and the team needs to focus on continuing the excellent start to the season. Let's not get bogged down with sideshows like this.
On the positive side (again), those fans - and I include myself amongst them - who never liked Newton as a player before he began his association with Wakefield, and had to suspend belief by supporting him as a player wearing our colours, can now go back to their original opinion of him without any conflict of emotions. That'll do for me.

I wouldn't worry too much about mud sticking to the club given that us and most other clubs have players who have got themselves into drug related or violence related trouble. Hardly a squeaky clean game with an untarnished image.
I assume the club will be taking advice on how to handle this situation regarding bans and cancelling of contracts.
