Tony looked good on the few occasions he started there last year but can you see him a) staying injury free and b) maintaining that standard week in/week out?? Currently our only other option would be Cockayne who i think nowadays is seen more as a centre/winger, or Tongia.'"

I dont think he is better than Blaymire as Matty was very good defensively where as Mathers isnt, however he does offer more than Matty did in attack which wasnt hard in the last few years but i personally dont want Mathers as i dont rate him at all and would prefer either a proper winger to challenge Morton and Fox for the wing position as i think Cockayne will be challenging for the full back slot or a proper to challenge Mellars and Collis as if 1 of those or both get injured we look very light there.

Agreed, no way is he better than Blaymire. They are different players and it depends on what the Coach wants.
Mathers is a far better attacking player but can be woeful in defence or under the high ball at times. Blaymire was more reliable but not spectacular.
The biggest difference is in brain power. Blaymire never gets credit for this but he rarely lost meters - he went down in the tackle once safely away from his try line. Mathers attempts to break every tackle no matter how impossible that is and often ends up in touch or behind his own try line - this puts a massive and unwanted strain on your defence. That's OK if you are Saints, it could be nightmare for us.
I'd have Blaymire any day but that doesn't mean Mathers couldn't do a job - it's whether we could take the rough with the smooth.

Exactly I agree can u imagine the amount of posts and the like on here the minute he gets put out of touch or gives a few easy tries away. He's better off at Cas then we can take advantage of the holes in his game next year.

Of the options that are available, I'd rather have Tongia.

Great attacking qualities but both suspect in defence. Don't kid yourself Tongia needs to work very hard on his defence.
What is the point in slagging a player like Mathers off just for the sake of it. He is clearly a good player. Doesn't matter whether you like him or not and I don't he's still more proven than Tongia. The fact is he started off as a rising star at Leeds, did a stint in Oz then with the Wire (I think) and has played well for Cas this season. He's certainly less to prove than Tongia.
Have to say this Tongia stuff is typical of Wakey fans. Almost to a man no one wanted this NRL reject who's never played a first team game. Now he's played one good game for us he is the hottest property on the planet and cannot be criticised in any way. Bizarre.

What, in that Mathers is clearly better
I honestly think the Tongia may well disappoint a few but I hope I'm wrong.

| How can you say they are similar players ? You must have seen a lot more of Tongia than I have, I've only seen Tongia play 4 games, maybe you can see into the future ? If so can I have Saturdays winning Lotto numbers please.
