He benefited from a perfect storm early on, Brian Smiths recruitment and strict regime set it up nicely for a more lackadaisical Chester to reap the rewards. He also benefited from a number of other clubs having very poor seasons, rebuilding & coaches that didn’t work like Cunningham at Sts. Sts, Wigan, Leeds, Warrington, Catalan, Huddersfield all went through a couple of seasons of poor form for one or more reasons, that allowed the likes of us, Cas & Salford to threaten the top 6. Kear then shored up the Chester regime for a season but once he left there was a speedy decline and deterioration.
So unlike Willie Poching who has a very decent winning % stretching back to late last season, Chester had plenty of time to prove to everyone (almost) how utterly awful he was as a coach.'"
He did sign David Fifita though

I think I've been pretty steady in my views.
I said I like Poching and thought he could turn it around. I'd go as far as to say not many coaches can do what he's done. Plenty have failed.
There is no 10 games for me. He gets a full season.
Nearly all of his signings so far have looked good to me and even Butler is starting to look the part.
I look forward to what he can do in the recruitment this year even though he has the limitations all coaches have at Belle Vue.'"
"Butler is starting to look the part". What? Because he made three half decent carries last night? Give me strength. Fickle as owt this. Hope he comes good but it's a bit early to be coming out with that.

Tbf not seen much of him, how many games has he played for us, like 4/5. Tbf he was solid against Hull Kr, made a better impact than Aydin who I thought was poor last night. Be interesting and good to see if Butler can recapture the form that got him in the knights team.

So that's why I said 'nearly all the signings' and 'starting to look'
I haven't said he's good.
I am definitely not fickle.

| Before the start of any season I think 20 points is a base target return… anything above that starts to move us towards the playoffs…
If we can make 20 points that will be a good finish

| I think Saints getting there bottoms kicked by Wigan yesterday suggests that we will face a stronger side than expected. It was good though.

Wigan really beat them up , would think they will be minus Walmsley and Hurrell as both looked like they picked up injuries to me.

Yep, it was good to see!

The team will be a hybrid team I'd imagine. There were 8 players who didn't play in either the first team or senior academy game.
Hill, Martyn, Moss, Royle, Baxter, Pemberton, Delaney, Norman. Hill is injured I believe, but most of the other 7 look likely to play against you. Simm, Hurrell and Walmsley were obviously injured against Wigan and the idiots at the RFL have banned Knowles and Sironen.
I'd expect the likes of LMS, Batchelor, Lussick and Bennison to play, potentially Lees, Paasi and Wingfield too.
Possibly something like:
Bennison
Martyn
Davies
Batchelor
Sambou
Welsby
Moss
Paasi
Lussick
Lees
Royle
Bell
Wingfield
LMS
Pemberton
Norman
Buckley

I don't think there's a worse player than Knowles in Super League for continual use of the shoulder charge. Third man in with a cheap shot is his speciality.

Bentley is a head shot specialist but rarely gets away without punishment.

| Quote: Wildcatnomore "We could indeedy, so given the way we have finished the last 2 seasons generally, how do we now progress to say what Salford have done? Apart from the obvious of signing 'better' players, how do we win those extra 5 or 6 games like they have? They have to be the benchmark for us as we are similar clubs in a lot of ways, and they certainly aren't breaking the bank as far as i'm aware. It's also more impressive given they've lost Watson, and virtually the whole team that got to 2 finals just 2 or 3 years ago!!'"
I would suggest a few things that will help us to match Salford's "impressive" season in which they have garnered 8 more points than us.
1. Go through the season with a very low number of injuries as Salford have done.
2. Get Warrington and Hull to implode again opening up a top 6 space.
3. Have a veto on certain referees who have destroyed several of our games with their bizarre refereeing.
4. Play from a ground that Sky want to feature - nearly there.
5. Don't pay our way as a club and spend the money on players we can't afford in the hope that someone comes along and bales us out.
6. Try not to play Leeds without a single available centre and having two second rows making their debuts it that extremely difficult position.
