It’s not the awarding of another contract but the fact it was for two years. I like many others believe at his age and injury record one would have been more prudent giving two years to Batchelor who we were willing to let go.

Perhaps Ashurst wasn't willing to do just one year but wanted two, reasonable enough. So perhaps we did a split the difference and offered him two years at a lower rate. It will have suited him for security as he heads towards retirement and allowed us to spread the cost of a player over two years and thus reduce the wage bill and allow us to use him more sparingly should injuries hit.

I don't know any of this in his case but I do it happens.

He was not initially offered a contract extension and was wanted by Huddersfield fortunately he believed in Wakefield and turned the offer down. I believe this to be common knowledge so the only reason he wears the red, white and blue this season was because he accepted less not because he had to but because he wanted to stay despite interest from others.

I think you've misunderstood the rules.

There is a cut off date for those players not under contract where you need to tell them they are not being offered a contract or that they are still in negotiation but can talk to other clubs.
If we offered Batch a contract he must have been in the second group. If he wanted to test his value in the market he was allowed to do it but it doesn't mean we didn't want him.

That first line is absolutely untrue!
