Correct. Another reason, along with momentum, the laws stipulate that forward passes are not judged relative to the field of play.
Interestingly, everyone is talking about this try coming from a forward pass, which it didn't, however, nobody is talking about the try that should have been chalked off, when Hall passed off the floor!!!!

| Quote: Fordy "Sorry IA, I have to disagree. Yes momentum comes into it but I would dispute the initial direction of the pass. It looked like it came out of his hands in a forward direction to me.'"
This. Everything said about the ball coming out of the hands backwards and the laws of physics etc is correct but don't count in this case Watkins passed the ball forward, end of! There was no passing of the ball backwards so the point is irrelevlent, it was a simple forward pass missed by ever more incompetent officials. Where McGuire and Watkins are at certain points are irrelevent for the exact same laws of physics that IA was arguing about. still, just another Leeds fan trying to justify the injustifiable! And Yes Halls try shouldn't have stood either. Still it was good for us as Hull will be battling with ourselves down with the dead men as the season goes on, Leeds won't be.

| Wow all this laws of physics talk, a simple league game begining to sound like a game of union, maybe we should go back to union type scrums then we could all have a big argument because league scrums are just as big a joke, whats the point of 12 players making a scrum just so another player can put the ball at his own players feet to re-start the game, and when the game is near the end and players rush in to form a scrum to stop the clock, yes our game is perfect isnt it.

Got to agree with you there, Briggy...League scrums are a complete waste of time (although Union scrums - which can take several minutes !!! - are an even bigger waste of time ).
We should either set scrums as they used to be in the good old days, or do away with them completely and just restart with a tap to the other side when both teams are ready.

Sod the science behind it - if it looks forward then it is forward. Maguire try 53rd minute absolute shocker - and the idiot ref is running alongside with his stupid head camera proving just how forward it was - ya couldn't make it up !!'"
This video explains the forward pass rule very well for both codes of rugby

After watching the video tell me what a forward pass is?

| Would you say if a player, stood still, passed the ball with enough force to make it travel backwards at a speed of, say, 1m/s that that would be a forward pass?

| I JUST HAVE TO LAUGH. IT IS VERY SIMPLE.A pass that travels from point a to point b is forward if point b is in front of point a. I would like that to be my new revolutionary contribution to Rugby League Football for the next season, if not this one if the world could regain its frigging sanity. Then I wouldn't feel cheated that my sides try was disallowed for a pass that was mm forward and the momentum and hands vs the last weeks try might have made it a try and its all so complex..BUT ITS NOT,,,FORWARDS IS FORWARDS!!!!!

So, if a player standing still passes the ball backwards using enough force to make it go backwards at a speed of 1m/s you'd be happy that's not a forward pass?

But of course that is not what the laws of the game say is a forward pass, and as far as I am aware, they never have said this. So, no wonder you are getting confused because if you don't understand the laws of the game then you are always going to struggle!
This is what the law actually says -
[iDeliberate 1. A player shall be penalised if he deliberately knocks on or passes forward.[/i
and the most important bit, the bit you and others clearly don't understand -
[i
Direction of Pass 1. The direction of a pass is relative to the player making it and not to the actual path relative to the ground. A player running towards his opponents’ goal line may throw the ball towards a colleague who is behind him but because of the thrower’s own momentum the ball travels forward relative to the ground. This is not a forward pass as the thrower has not
passed the ball forward in relation to himself. This is particularly noticeable when a running player makes a high, lobbed pass.[/i
This is the bit you need to understand and of course the law really has to be this way because even the RFL or its players can't break the physical laws of the universe!

Sorry but it's not that simple. And, this may be news to you, the sun doesn't go round the earth and the earth isn't flat!

Yep. The video that The Biff's Back posted on the previous page is the best way to demonstrate it.

It would not work on the ipad but just looked it now on the lap-top and indeed it is a great video... maybe Sky Sports should do their own specific RL version?
I particularly like the guy throwing the ball backwards over his head in full run and it travelling 3m forward relative to the pitch, that really should demonstrate to the doubters why you don't judge forward passes relative to the pitch.
The interesting bit Him is how many of the above people in this thread claiming to know what a forward pass is will actually bother to watch it, or will they prefer to remain in blissful ignorance???
