| Quote: TheDreadnought "No I don’t, many on here are simply selective of what they read when I post.
I understand he was the best player in the world at the time, with the signing Trinity will will have well been under the spotlight and the attendances improved. I didn’t know until yesterday that his wages were paid by a businessman so I’m presuming Trinity will have seen the full benefit of higher attendances.
But why do we still have him coming over 35 years later with his name in lights now? We have players who have done just as much if not more who won’t even get a mention.
IMO he might of been the best player at the time but there was certainly no major success on the field that came from the signing.'"
At a guess, because the Company that pays for him to come over makes money off it, as does Wally; the other thing is, there's a load of RL fans that want to see him & speak to him live one on one, people that were around then and people that also weren't but still want't to just meet such a legend of the game and hear his stories, plenty of people that don't even support Trinity go to see him. I'm sure Sterling's been to Hull over the years in a similar fashion & loads turned up to see him and will next time he's over. Or if you was into Football even if he hadn't played for your club, do you think Pele would be a waste of time going to see live?
I know Warrington have had Andrew Johns over a few of times for a 'an Audience with' and he only played 3 games in 2005.

| At the time I was a teenager who watched all 3 local teams without having a favourite so I probably saw Wally about 4 or 5 times. He had a magical quality about him and the only other player that had the same effect on me was watching Van Vollenhoven live. Its great watching the highlights but I seem to remember on quite a few occasions he threw those amazing 30 metre flat bullet passes that none of us had seen before, but neither had his team mates and they struggled to catch them. Fantastic memories though.

| Quote: TheDreadnought "So much so we lost half of those 10 games and were relegated the same season. I know what he’s done for the game and I understand why signing for Trinity at the time was huge but I just think it’s almost disrespectful to those who have offered more over years of service.
It’s kind of like in the amateur game where the lad who’s nowhere to be seen during the week to train but shows up on the weekend expecting to play halfback, it shows a complete lack of respect for those who put the time and effort in.
By all means acknowledge his spell at Trinity but it wouldn’t take long to find someone from the same era who’s more deserving IMO.'"
I'd be interested to know who you are naming in that era?
He will never be in the Wakefield hall of fame because he doesn't fit that criteria but he was exceptional and lifted a team that were seriously lacking at the time.

Sterling is actually coming over in Feb I think.

Considering it's way before my time I'm not as familiar with the squads but Mike Lampkowski?
That must be the 5 or 6th time someone has said that Lewis lifted the team that were "lacking" at the time, the side were relegated in the very same season!

I was there Dreadnought so I know the team was struggling.
Lampy was coming to the end by then and missed the whole season injured. That made a difference to us as well that season. But even though he is also one of my all time favourites he isn't likely to be called a legend either.
You could pick Nigel Bell as he made is debut that season but we were recovering after the 79 team was completely smashed up and distributed for other teams to benefit from their success.
We looked like doing something while Lewis was here but I don't think we won another game after he left and just plummeted down the table.
If you want to see Lewis at the time, he left us in 84, which was possibly his best year in Aus. Watch the State of Origin in that year and you'll see why people still want to see him and listen to him.
As I said, not a hall of famer for Wakefield but a hall of famer in world rugby.

You also stated you were a boy so I'll take that with a pinch of salt. It also doesn't change the fact that the struggling side continued to struggle and were relegated.
By Era I didn't think you meant specifically the 83/84 season, Lampkowski played over 150 games for us and I'm sure there will be more who've also committed numerous years of service, I just think it shows a lack of respect.

I was 15 if that's ok with you.
But you take it as a pinch of salt compared to your never having seen him play.
Why argue so adamantly about something you've never seen?
I don't see how a guy coming to the UK to talk to people who want to pay to listen to him is in any way a lack of respect to anyone else.
No one is saying he is better than the legends of the club when you compare what he has achieved for us.
As someone who has met all the living Hall of Famers quite often, I can tell you they hold him in high regard too.

It was you who stated you were only a kid. My opinion on Rugby at 15 and my opinion now are two different things. (queue a joke about my age from Willzay or Lil "Widnes" Wayne) and technically I have seen him play but only through a monitor/TV like most on here.
I just don't like the big fuss for some fella who played 10 games for us 35 years ago and helped us get relegated but lets not forget, it was in front of 18,000.
Where did I say that anyone else was better than him? I've noted that he was the best player in the world at the time. However IMO we have had halfbacks since then who have done much more the club...

If we went out and signed the best player in the world mid way through this season and brought him to Belle Vue, even if it was just for half a season don't you think people would get excited about that???
I get that he was only here for 10 games, and that the Wakey team that he played in didn't manage to do anything special but everyone here (including yourself) is acknowledging that at that time he was the best RL player in the world and we managed to get him. That's massive and is rightly acknowledged as such by most. Even on this thread there are plenty of people that saw him play agreeing he is not the biggest Wakefield legend ever.
I really don't understand your problem TBH.

I'm ok with you not getting it. Leave those of us who want to, to make a big fuss.
I can't think of any other player in the history of Wakefield Trinity, with the exception of maybe Neil Fox, who would fill the big room at Cedar Court.
