Quote: Sacred Cow "I’d suggest you take it with a pinch of salt. Won’t happen for many reasons. That’ll will not stop the council peddling the myth for a few months though. There’s more chance of it being built in MC’s back garden.

Put it this way, if the club were to align on this project then Manni Hussain would have BV as rubble before you know it. It would then be redeveloped for a mix of small community use pitches and mainly commercial. So it would be gone for good. Win for 88M. We would have nowhere to go as Newmarket is as likely as Monty Pythons Norwegian Blue Parrot taking flight and the reserved matters planning keeps getting kicked into the long grass until a point comes where we have conceded it won’t happen. Time constraints mean that time is close. Then the planning will go through. Yorkcourt win. Balne Lane is a smoke screen designed to throw people off the scent. The council appear helpful, we are made out to be the bad boys. We move out of the area, the council wash hands of all responsibility. Council win. See a trend here?

We have been backed into a corner with only one card left to play and it’s the ‘hope it all kicks off if we leave the city one’. Sadly most of the city couldn’t give a flying and would prefer another Costa Coffee & Burger King to a rugby ground.'"

Absolutely spot on mate!
If the council had any intentions of seeing this stadium business through, there would have been something in place long before now.
I can think of many projects that have been completed in less time than this stadium saga and at much greater expense in other parts of the country.
The community stadium is for the benefit of the people of Wakefield and putting things in perspective a small cost for the benefit it will reap for the city.
WMDC are incompetent at best as far as this issue goes.
In these days of so called openness and honesty the council are bottom of the league.

Quote: Eastern Wildcat "Oír of curiosity, how far down Balne Lane is it. Bit spent much time on there in past 20 years or so. I used to know it around Balne Lane WMC.

Alternatively, Wakefield City, if coming from Thornes Road, how about pre match pint at bottom of Westgate'"

That’s the beauty of its location, pre match pint bottom Westgate walk up new Scarborough, pre match top of Westgate or in town and walk down to ground Wrenny Alverthorpe Flanshaw drink local and walk to ground.

So we have realists who know exactly what is going on here, and the odd one or two deluded fantasists who are putting forward pubs to have a pint in before the match at our shiny new Balne Lane stadium.

The only time it looked remotely possible that something would get moving on this was when the club/trust were threatening legal action/judicial review. As soon as we withdrew that threat the delaying tactics began all over again.
Surely the time has come to put a deadline to the council and say if nothing has happened by end of August we are going down the legal route????

I do agree there Fordy, certainly did seem to make them feel unseasy about the entre situation. The main concern with going down legal route on things is initial costs. Though i think in instantes like this, would be worth it

Location wise, i think in vicinity to the city centre would be good, better than Newmarket, just not too sure regarding road networks.

Nothing wrong gastric i think in a bit of harmless banter about pre match pints. BV used to have a few, within a stones throw from the ground not too long ago, and they all got full

60 years supporting Trinity .............. and the psychiatrist still hasn't found a cure!:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_24147.jpeg

Quote: sandcat20 "There are several points here. I grew up on Balne Lane and spent most of my time on those playing fields which we used to call "The Tips". It may sound like a peculiar name until you realise that that is just what they were at one time - the council rubbish dump!. Once they had got to a suitable level some soil was dumped on top and playing fields created. This was back in the late 40's, early 50's. They were then OK for a long time with football and rugby pitches, a cricket pitch (tarmac!) and a building for changing rooms. Eventually it fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance. Many, many years later I worked at Wakefield College and I was asked if I knew anything about the playing fields. I think that the college owned them at that point and was looking at selling them off as building land to get some money. However there was this clause about community use. The problem for the college was they couldn't be used as sports fields due to broken glass, tin cans and all sorts of other stuff from the council tip days being exposed by erosion etc. It would have been too expensive to dig it out to a sufficient depth, make sure there weren't any nasties like asbestos in it and then deposit an enormous amount of topsoil on it. In the end nothing happened and the site is as it is at the moment - a right headache for whoever owns it. I reckon that the cost of "rehabilitating" the land would be too much for anyone given the covenant on the land.

The next point is access. The streets around the site are all very narrow with a limited number of approaches. At Belle Vue you can approach from 4 different directions with ease. With Balne Lane playing fields there is only Balne Lane itself which is not very wide and has on street parking. There is no road to the fields themselves, only a small lane with a bridge that could not take the weight (literally and figuratively) of the traffic. It is wide enough for one car width and would probably collapse under weight of a decent 4x4!

Linked to that point is the access from town via Balne Lane. There is a bridge under the main Westgate - Leeds main line. This isn't wide enough for 2 cars to pass in compfort and give way markings have been put on the down side to avoid problems. Anyone who goes that way at rush hour can tell you what a problem it is. It could not carry all the match day traffic from the north of the city. From other direction traffic would have to go through Flanshaw Estate, again with narrow roads. There is no way that any planning officer could approve such a plan without enormous road changes with (probably) astronomic expense. WMDC doesn't have that kind of money.

I could go on but it's becoming an essay rather than a post so I'll shut up now except to say it seems a load of b******s!'"

EVENTUALLY, WE'LL WIN SOMETHING, ,MAYBE, IF I'M STILL ALIVE THEN:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_31007.jpg

I'm not sure access would be an issue necessarily, as who expects to park right next to the ground? It's more akin to the Warrington ground, in that it is very close to the city centre, is a very short walk from Westgate station, and it is surrounded by housing estates that can be approached from other directions. The only point of access that is bad is the immediate approach under the railway bridge (would the team coach fit under it).

The likelihood is that there would be parking restrictions on many of the streets, but if you think how far you currently walk to Belle Vue, I bet you can easily find somewhere to park the same distance away. Very few get to park on the ground.

Having said that, what there doesn't appear to be is an entrance to the fields that could accommodate the contractors and it would be very hidden away. I suspect it's merely the outcome of a meeting where Box has ordered his lackeys to find a field, any old field, just for something to say. Queens Drive was a much better option. Good plot, a visible location for passing traffic, access to a motorway close by.

Understand the council are considering charging for car parking on a Sunday.

Too true about "the tips". I served my apprenticeship with a Cas stalwart and he always told me your Tetanus injections had to be up to date before you could play at Odsal as it was built over a quarry. Don't know if the same applies but you never know whats underneath as there were no restrictions in those days. I know its all to do with finance but as I've said before I'd love to see Belle Vue fully restored to some thing like its former glory. Love to park at the common and walk down as its all part of the game day experience for me.

I too would love to see BV renovated for similar reasons but more than that, I would like our disgrace of a Council to enforce the agreement to have the ground built at Newmarket! But I do love the way the club has frustrated Box and kept us a good SL side, so he can't just sit there and hope we fizzle away.

I agree, unless something is currently going on in the background we don't know about, and Michael says not, then it is time to take legal action and this time see it through. I would go so far to say, even if that is at the cost of player signings. The stadium issue trumps that. There is no point being mollified by promises and offers from Box et al anymore. They speak with forked tongue. It is well beyond time to see this out in court
