| Quote: jonh "Don't think I deserve any respect because I went to public school. Just lucky to be the son of a plumber who did well for himself in business. I also come on here to talk rugby and exchange views without personally attacking and calling names people I have never met. That shows the type of mentality some people have.
I'm happy to be proven wrong in this case, I just have my doubts that's all and as mentioned above I do find it a little odd to give him a new deal now given he had 3 years left.
I'm not sure if he will start next year but at 20 he needs to force his way in and justify the commitment the club have made in him by performing.
What Wakey have now is depth and competition for places which is great if a player gets a knock it shouldn't be a huge step up for his replacement as it has been in the past.
I still feel it is going to be a very tough season for Trinity and I hope supporters expectations are not too high and they don't vanish if the team are not putting the performances in right from the off. This squad whilst an improvement is still a squad in real danger and it is mission survival again. As I have said on other posts I am more concerned about relegation this year than I was last.
For me Hull KR are the most likely team for us to look to finish above as all the teams in the lower end of the division seem to have improved on and in some cases off the field.
I feel Jones Bishop and Finn are excellent additions to the squad and keeping them fit could be pivotal in our season as long as both are coming to play. The pack is solid without being spectacular and should hold it's own, and if Moore clicks they could have some very good days.'"
So good you needed to say it twice

Another excellent well structured response. As I said earlier I'm here to talk rugby. I'm not here to derail threads or power trip so won't be contributing further unless it is on a rugby related matter.
Feel free to get the last pointless word in, it seems you need it.

| But back to Tom Johnstone.........whoever you are you must accept the lad has potential, I have not seen a winger of his quality coming through our ranks for years.
We may all have different views as to what he is capable of and I have mine. I won't put any pressure on him, suffice to say he's going to score us some good tries and for now, that will do.

| In addition to those "great" Trinity wingers already mentioned what about the likes of Berwyn Jones, David Smith, Andys Wilson and Fletcher, and Keith Slater??? I think Tom Johnstone will one day rank along with all of those

Put it this way had Johnson's brilliant soaring take of the highball follows by an equally brilliant offload been allowed to stand (and it was close) it would have been a contender for try of the season. How many rookie wingers achieve 9 tries in 12 games (most self created) and be a fraction short of a try of the season in their first year? Not many but most that do are considered to have potential and even the chance to go all the way by all except John it would appear.

Andy fletcher!!!! Looked as though a stiff breeze would blow him over! BUT he could run a whippet to a stand still used to score some crackers.. Remember him running rings round some puffed out hull fac forwards in a challenge cup match at belle view..

| With Clarkey singing Johnstone's praises last season, when it looked like we may end up in the Championship, I wonder if he will still be singing his praises this season?
Nowt no surer, that if Tom were wearing a different coloured shirt, the Sky commentry box would be awash!

| I believe that he showed sufficient last season to suggest he will be a star of the future. I think signing him to a four year contract could be a shrewd move because I expect him to attract much attention from the usual suspects. We have ensured that if any club wants to sign him they will have to pay or wait four years.

Sean Ainscough is a great example of how it can all go wrong. Looked World Class as a junior. Tore the Australian Academy team apart. First season for Wigan scored a try a game many of which were self made. Great pace over 30 yards, fantastic step etc. Season 2 came on the radar weaknesses were noted and teams exploited them, now the thing he will be remembered for is his attempted kick into touch last year in lower league rugby.
History is littered with wingers who have a good debut year, and maybe a second then vanish into obscurity.
I've expressed my opinion on him earlier, I think he is solid in all areas on the match except in defence especially positionally, I don't see anything that makes me sit up and think "wow" that kid looks special, but that is just my opinion. Quite why you feel the need to quote me constantly in your posts in not sure but I am flattered.
Offering a 4 year deal after such limited exposure to first team rugby all be it a relatively successful one when he has 3 years left anyway is an odd one and I think born more out of a PR attempt after the recent losses than necessity.
Apologies by the way for the drama queen comment, I've never met you so am unsure of your sex, it seems my assumption was incorrect.

| Quote: Trinity1315 "I agree with you TRB and don't wish to be pedantic but perhaps it would have been more accurate to say 'many great wingers recently' we had great wingers in the 60's and 70's - the likes of Hirst, Prinsloo, Fred Smith, Coetzer and Slater to name but a few. Sorry, I tend to live in the past but those wingers would have walked into any team nowadays.
BTW Johnstone is a brilliant prospect, those who doubt it cannot be relied on for their RL knowledge.'"
Sorry, only old enough to know them by reputation. Fletcher and Juliff were my era and not a great lot since, with some very good triers!
