| Bang on Brian Briggs Ghost, one of my main concerns with our game is just how poor, in general , defence has become. You see so many poor tackle attempts these days that is 100 % down to players not tackling round the legs. It the fault of coaches at all levels insisting that youngsters are coached not to tackle round the legs. Two exceptions, watch Rob Burrow and Danny Brough who are brilliant one on one defenders who tackle round the legs. Now when you watch RU it is obvious that they are now the game with the better defenders. Its all down to the coaching.

| Pure speculation but what if Tim Smith has told the club he is returning to Australia next season (hence the 1 year deal) and Miller is to be given a 3 year deal to understudy Tim this season and be a long term replacement after that.

A possibility I must admit, but realistically we don't have the time or money to be able to afford understudy's ...we have to hit the ground running this season or we are doomed....doomed I tell ya....doomed

| Quote: ball-in-hand "Sammutt at Full Back is a non-starter for me. Look how easily he got swatted off by Carney in the Cas game at home. It was like Carney was being irritated by a fly and he didn't need to break stride to score. Sammutt may be dangerous when returning kicks or joining the line but defensively he is lightweight. I would rather see. Max Jowitt at fullback but the best option is Hall with Jowitt coming in for selected games.'"
I wouldn't look at Sammutt at fullback, but, in the early/mid season Carney was swatting most defenders off, later on in the season teams got him Sussed, put two defenders on him and he was very average.

Sammut is a quality RL player I hope we are planning on playing him at 6 as he and Smith seem to me to have styles of play that will complement each other. I am not convinced that Pita is a 6, I think he is style of play, his strengths, make him well suited to playing the modern style hooker role.'"
Gerry Round? Someoneis showing their age!

Players are taught to take around the legs, from behind, from either side and from the front with both passive and aggressive techniques. They are also taught to tackle as a defensive unit working with far more sophistication than defences of old. Attacking and covering the ball carrying arm is predominantly the way the 1st defender is coached in the game today and it's taught that way through necessity. Offloads would kill a defensive team who's first man in went low every time, they'd get carved to ribbons.
Rugby Unions defences are 15 years behind Rugby League, they do not have the better defenders but they can still get away with leg tackles in Union so they're not exposed as they would be in Rugby League.

That just isn't true. The techniques and impact in the tackle are completely different for a start.
You very rarely get a forward running at another forward from further than 3 steps so you can't compare that to a full on charge from a front rower.
Equally the fact that there is 2 extra players on the field gives less space
The players playing rugby Union are mostly just as capable as their rugby league counterparts, apart from the fact that they have been taught to play a different game.
Having played both codes in all three front row positions, I can tell you that apart from catching the ball, there are no other shared skills in those positions. What you do in the tackle is different because of the rules of the game.

Yep saw him play as well as Gerry Round. He was second best full back to play for Trinity after Round.

You must know by now that Belly will happily spoil a very good point by adding something that is utterly ludicrous - why I don't know - though RU has got better it's a way to go yet and tacking in RL lack the skills it once did.

| A rugby union forward isn't trying to break the tackle but hit the deck and recycle, hence why they forwards aren't as good defensively; they don't need to be. The last thing a union forward wants to do is hit the deck on the other side of the tackler, which is why the big Welsh lad (can't be bothered to remember his name) was no good at Wigan. For all his size, he'd never been trained to break a tackle; it wasn't the right way to play.

| Think the club should not rush into this signing, as it's not as though he is a blue chip signing, with clubs falling over themselves to sign him.
The only advantage Miller has over Siejka, is that you know before you sign him, what you are getting.
Whether Webster has seen something that no one else has in Miller but as has been pointed out several times, a pretty pointless signing unless Webster has been playing up'n'unders on the field with him!
