You can tinker with the half backs all you want but until our pack dominates or at least holds it own against the opposition we aint going to win another game. You could put Thurston and Cronk behind our pack and they would do nothing. Half backs cannot perform when they are on the back foot.

Just my opinion of course.

I agree the pack needs to do a hell of a lot more in the second half of games, but a quality h/back the likes of Thurston and Cronk will make things happen be it a clever chip over the top, a killer sidestep evading big silly props, or a bit of pace to scoot through a gap. Take your pick, none of these skills seem to be in John and Smiths locker. There lies a major problem, you can blame a light pack all you want but all John and Smith have shown is the occasional good pass and some decent decisions near the opponents try line. No way near enough skill shown by 2 average imports (as of yet, maybe it will change?)

Quote: bellycouldtackle "RA has been very loyal to his players but I think now it is time to have a re think. Danny Orr and Chase will be sleeping very soundly at the thought of coming up against Smith and John. With this in mind I would play Cockayne at 7 and Mathers at 6. Cockayne has been our best player and he would give Orr nightmares. Mathers would give us something we have not seen all season, a 6 that will move forward and take the line on. So my team for Saturday, presuming that we cannot get Ellis back from Fev, would be

I did suggest putting mathers at stand off to give Ben C a shot at full back.
Apparently Mathers has played there for cas.
Wouldn't put BC at scrum half just because he's playing well though.
It's taken half a season for the players to be 'accustomed' to Smith/John combo (even though it is so obvious and readable to everyone else) and so to change both players this week would be something so stupid that even RA wouldn't attempt.

Take your point and I have to say I'm disappointed in John but I have some sympathy for Smith. He's behind a beaten pack and is not getting a great deal of support from his fellow half back.

I believe with a good stand off and pack we'd see what Smith can do.

He could try Wood or Wildie - but that's not Agars style it seams. Half way through the season and nothing to play for. It beggars belief that we can't experiment a bit without doing to much damage to the gelling process.

Cockayne played 7 for normy knights for years so i believe him having a game at 7 couldnt do any harm, providing he has a few weeks practice sessions in the position to learn all the moves.

R.A. could just put 4 big uns on the bench if its purely no go forward with Lauitiiiti, James, Raleigh and Mellars (utility in case of injury to a back).

Quote: bren2k "That actually sounds quite sensible - both players have a style that could potentially complement each other; Cockayne is very direct and seems fearless around the collision, whereas Smith is better at organising plays and has an (intermittently) excellent passing game.

I'd stick Walshaw on the wing to replace Cockayne - he's a massive human and difficult to stop - and he needs game time.'"

Cockayne at 7 sounds bonkers....but so dull and meaningless is our on the field playing season that I am prepared to see it given a try..anything to wake me up and give me hope of relief from this tedium

disgree..Fox has made some errors in play but has been hopelessly exposed by some poor centre play. He has pace and makes a lot of yards. Him and Cockayne must have made more yrads than most of out forwards. We would stand stilll at times without Fox and Cockayne

Quote: Bubbashrimp "What you are failing to grasp here though ( as has been pointed out on many occasions by my fellow B&W's) is that RA doesn't do a plan B, when other people ( mostly fans I admit) can see where the problem lies and can provide possible solutions, RA just keeps on ploughing the same furrow regardless, which in time just leads to frustration and alienation of said fans.
I know you will tell me to p**s off and mind my own, but we know what you are going through and I genuinely sympathise with your frustrations. Good luck for the weekend.'"

Wakey fan in Beverley. I won't tell you to p off. We play like you did when we beat you last year at the KC. Lifeless, disorganised and easily made to give in. RA is just not a lead coach...i'm sure he knows a lot about RL but a leader that does not necessarily make you. Our players look like they have no real belief; for players that have some fairly good cvs in many cases this is not good. I dont think they believe in their coach or their system, such as any exists, which isn't much. Sometimes you just know there is something wrong and there clearly is at WTW at the moment as was obvious with you under RA. Even the brilliant and inspiring Sam Obst looked like he'd been given RAs kryptonite, sucked of his usual life force and not a fraction of the player he was under JK. Please Mr Glover, have a word with your CEO and give us a life back at Belle Vue.

I thought Obst played some of the best rugby of his career at hull. Looked alot better in the Hull team than he did at Wakefield anyway.

Playing Cockayne at 7 at least you know he has go forward and will always give 100% and it just might work with Smith at 6 giving him more time to set things up.Smith to me has always looked more like a 6 than a 7 when you look at his style of play you never know it just might work whats to lose.

Sounds desperate to me. Don't think much will change this season with the pivots unless they get injured, Smith needs to run with the ball more and take on the line as he's got the ability. Cockayne is a very good player & needs to be used as much as possible in attacking plays.
