I appreciate that money is tight for Councils and they are under tremendous pressure but its Revenue that is the problem for social services, bin collections etc. etc. Capital is not a problem and the Council can borrow at very low rates as they dis for the Eastern Relief Road. They will get their money back as land is sold and occupiers/house holders start paying Council Tax and business rates.

The Trust & Club has suggested that the Council borrows the money and builds the Stadium. Michael Carter has offered to fund the interest on the loan until its repaid so it will not cost the Council a penny. The Council can recover the money to repay the loan from Section 106 Agreements and Community Infrastructure Levies imposed on Yorkcourt and the owners of Belle Vue as that is developed so as I say it will not cost them a penny.

In order to see this Stadium built there has to be a political will and drive from the Council, something that seems to be very much lacking at the moment.

Given what you say above Sandal, surely the question of why the Council won't go for it needs to be asked in the Public domain. I am sure Jeremy Cross asking the question might prompt a response

Quote: bren2k "I don't know anything about how those developments were funded; wouldn't it be ironic if some European money was involved...? But I doubt the LA paid for it?

I'm in no way making excuses for WMDC - I agree that we are in a shameful position in the City in terms of sports and leisure facilities and are badly served by a leader who appears to direct his efforts based on self-interest and positive PR; but the comment I was replying to was about the wider picture in terms of LA budget cuts - which are just a reality - the settlement for LA's from central government has gone down year on year, hence the disappearance of many services and facilities.

On the point of political will - I tend to agree that there are plenty of things WMDC could do, short of paying for the thing, to get it moving; but they seem unwilling. Mr Box spent 2 years simply saying that it was nothing to do with the Council, only to change his tune when the national media got hold of it - once that died down, so did his commitment to getting a stadium built.'"

No such thing as European money, it's just a slice of UK tax payers money returning.

When you explain things in this way, why the hell aren't WMDC agreeing to the deal ?
It really does make you think that they dont give a toss about the districts oldest professional club.

Driving down the M62 earlier today, you cant help but notice just how much bigger "the big white box" is getting.
It looks like it will be double its previous size eusa_wall.gif

I would be showing Box this article and then asking how the hell they can justify 790m (30m per annum over 26 years) on one waste treatment facility yet not provide decent sports and leisure facilities including borrowing the money to build the community stadium

Thought exactly the same thing when I read this. Funding a community stadium is small change compared and what a fantastic asset it would be for the city. As posted many times before rugby, football, music concerts, school events etc etc eusa_wall.gif

Quote: bren2k "I don't imagine they are happy - but this is the reality of austerity Britain; 8 years of Tory/Coalition cuts to LA budgets, has seen them forced to cut their spending to public services, social care, schools and of course libraries, parks and leisure facilities. Risky to talk politics, but it's important to understand the bigger picture - and they are just facts, without any party political spin.'"

Don't think the bus station was paid for by Wakefield MDC. I believe it comes under metro's funding and is in effect paid for by all West Yorkshire authorities. Ditto for the railway station.

Oops! Sorry Wilzay. I understand the frustration but I don't think it helps throwing in examples of what the council has afforded.
