If, as aluded to by feline he chose not to sign for us, isn't there, as with Cain, a possibility/probability he has set his sights on elsewhere?

loyalties to clubs go out of the window when a wad of money is flashed in front of them, we need to bridge that game with the other clubs starting with the new stadium and facilities, you have to get player to want to play for the club and not the salary, very hard to do

Quite right!
But with all this seasons salary budget back in the bank, maybe if we value this kid it's time to show it?

| Quote: upthecats "That's fair enough we all have different opinion's on things.
I read topics and try to add my opinion based on my own thoughts and games/things I've watched, if you want to base your opinion on the opinion of someone else then who am I to argue?
Just out of interest though in the opinion of the said people you respect, who was the standout player(s) from last season's Grand Final winning academy team if it wasn't Southernwood?'"
I don't think there was a stand out player as such. Clearly Annnekin and Southernwood were the ones to catch the eye but they won IMO because they were a team. Individually there were better players at other clubs. However we had again IMO even quality throughout. I reinforce this because at the beginning of last season there was a thread bemoaning the lack of talent at junior Academy which I agreed with. So to be fair none of us saw it coming and Southernwood was just considered the best of an average bunch with potential which is all they have at that age.
What I'm saying is that no way was he good enough to carry the team alone which is sometimes the case at that level. The team as a whole layed him a platform for which I'm told he did not always use as agreed.
He's potentially a quality player but he's improved little in the last year IMO although I realise he had an injury at some point.
What is for certain is that he is way to fragile for SL and may remain so for a while. He could counter that by improving other aspects of his game and general athleticism but that would involve listening to advice, not his strong point I'm told.
Mark Colbeck springs to mind.

But I agree its up to those at the club to allow him to leave although i genuinely think of the 2 involved in the swap he will go on to have the superior career of the 2.'"
I'd like to see that quote, I must have been trolling because I'd never seen Tomkins play until last year on SKY - not like me at all

Find the quote Jonh and you can humble pie me - that would be nice for you.
As I've made clear, these are not my opinions on Southernwood but those of people who actually know him and trained him. These are opinions even those as up themselves as you and I have to bow to - no?

| Yep, agree with most of that.
As I said earlier I really hope Annekin can be persuaded to sign on and develop with us because unlike Cain he certainly does have the size and strength and potetial to break into the team earlier as I think he's still a year younger than most of last season's team.
Even with him though I suppose it isn't guaranteed he will make the step up. Someone I'd compare with him who I watched plenty of at the same level was Tom Haughey, absolutely outstanding at academy level and a real similar blockbusting style of running the angle like Annekin but struggled with shoulder problems and never really made the top grade unlike a whole host of lads from the same academy team who he regularly outshone week in week out (Mason, Feather, Snitch, Handforth etc...)
Mark Colbeck eh? What a player he looked when he broke in looked to have all the ability in the World, wasn't there some sort of incident in Town that had an affect on him in the long run?
