Top six 2005 - Trinity.: |

After a two week + gap between games I would hope we don’t have hardly any walking wounded. There didn’t look to be any issue with them physically. As I have said we won the forward battle and had the lions share of field position and yardage/possession on the oppositions line. We just failed (yet again) to turn pressure into points and showed weak resolve in goal line defence.
Our best 17 isn’t the worst in superleague for quality no but it may be the weakest in terms of attitude and application.

IMO Our squad seems to suffer more from mental issues ( right mindset/attitude ) rather than physical challenges if I was a guessing man. Take Roby for example the other day ,gets a finger dislocated, physio comes on puts it back in and off he goes , that’s what you call commitment and a tough mentality . We have the medical facilities to care for the walking wounded who will be assessed whether fit for action , but do we have a phycologist in the camp who can get them up mentally for the rigours of a game . We seem to wilt in the face of tough opposition . I’m no expert in anything least of all, sports psychology (I’ve all on spelling it ) but I do think we are missing a trick in so much as modern athletes need both physical and a good mental attitude to succeed in the modern era in any sport .

| Max let Bott in twice was really poor from him. Lucky we don't have another decent full back.

| Whatever the problems with the team I don't think they lie at fullback.
There are some people who like Max there and some who don't, and they will have the same view even if he plays a blinder every week.
I would 'rest' Lyne and try Minns there.
No doubt the forwards new an injection of fresh faces though, who aren't set in their ways - new ideas, and will to win!

I think Max has been one of the most consistent player all season if not the most, so if Sundays game wasn't up to his usual standard then fans should make allowances for the odd blip, I understand that he might not be to everyone's taste especially Rocky fans which included myself but even so credit should be given where it's due, just goes to show the fickleness of some fans.

| The performance problems do not start with our fullback because the opposition have usually got through or around our line of defence leaving him somewhat isolated. I would suggest we look elsewhere to try to sort our defence maybe by being able to score more points.

Fullback is not the issue for us.
If we switch then so be it. But for me Max is the safest pair of hands we have.
You are only seeing his involvement in the tries because he made an effort to get there when no one else did.

| But It's not just a blip With Max. Like I've said before Max Is Great catcher of the ball a very good Attacker a great passer of the ball But his tackling Oh dear I got slaughtered on here before, mentioning this, but Sunday it was there clearly for everyone to see. But it's there in all matches if you look It always has been He hides it very well diving at players & just missing going in with the knees. He's always 2nd or 3rd man in a tackle But it is something we should look at & I know there's lots of things wrong at Wakefield. But he is our last line of defence & it would help if he could tackle. Chester wouldn't play him so, & I'm only guessing, he could see it that's why we kept getting fullbacks instead of playing him. This argument could go on for a long time

So apart from the fact Chester DID play him.
I still don't get that people think Jowitt was at fault for those tries when Hall and Gaskell actually touched the guy but didn't make a tackle and Dave left the gap because he jumped out of the line

Like a goal keeper in football, they are exposed so when things don't go well it's more obvious. Some have set their stall out with Jowitt and are quick to point any errors on his game. I was a fan of Rocky but the attack stopped with him often (unless he made a break and his pace got him away) and his defence wasn't great either but never got half the jip Jowitt gets.
As others have said, our problems are a lot bigger than a perfectly adequate full back.

Exactly this, some very good points made here.

Exactly like a gk in football, if they have to deal with the ball, the defenders are not doing their job

Did he?. The first try he just never quite held him so yes for that one.
The second try Bott steps inside him so Hood should be making that tackle for me but was far too slow.

| We start again with Leeds away. It will be interesting if TJ has recovered from his slight knock. We can all hope that finally something has clicked because the time to panic is getting nearer with every defeat.
