| Saw a lot of good comedians there but the one that made me and every one round us laugh most was Ken Goodwin. settle down now.

It was named the 'Pussycats' club around 1980 - sadly the decline of what was another great asset (the Theatre club-not the Pussycats club) to the city that wasn't supported!

It obviously wasn't that great an asset, or people would have gone? Times change, people want a different type of entertainment, and the patrons of a venue become middle aged and stop going out. The club was something of an anachronism for the final years of its life - and I say that with no joy - my family had a lot to do with that scene in Wakefield, and my Dad played the venue many times.
In the 80's, the whole Wakey scene became focused on Westgate - and it was a draw for people from all over the country; I had nights out then where you literally couldn't get a drink in some places it was so busy; happy days. Go there now before 11pm and it's virtually dead - with kids arriving in taxis to go clubbing til the early hours. So it goes.

Yeah, great was probably the wrong word, it's just that Batley Variety club survived many years after the Theatre club closed but perhaps two such venues within a few miles of each other was one too many.
Anyway the 'Pussycats club' was certainly not my cup of tea - hated it.

| Heppy's brings back fond memories of The Kalahari Bushmen on Monday nights at Balne Lane club back in the mid-sixties. Great entertainment. Also fish, chips and mushy peas in his cafe on Warrengate.

| If I remember right Heppy's got round the licensing laws by serving food to stay open after 11 pm. The entry fee included burger and chips which even a greedy B like me found inedible.

You could get great fish and chips or steak and chips if you paid extra. I had my 21st bash in Heppys with around a dozen mates. big scrap broke out ,some lads from Donny if I remember tossed a bottle of vinegar at us, anyway Ernie Field who was a bouncer at the time and i knew him well sorted em out for me

Correct he did. Heppy was a great bloke, my dads best mate and lived a few houses away up to his death. He had more stories about that place than Jackanory. Only ever went in with family for Fish and Chips for dinner. By the time I started going up town, it was knows as a bit of a grab a granny place, so never really bothered with it on a night.

| Heppy was just slightly before my time really
My Dad though mentions good nights though with the Kalahari Bushmen, Tony Costello on piano etc.
Going back to the Westgate thread, yes I am starting to re discover Westgate after a few years living abroad, and kids now starting to grow up a bit now
