| Quote: ball-in-hand "Liam Kay cannot have been asking for more money than the deal we have just given Owen. We should have kept him. The club needs to be built on local talent with a sprinkling of class from overseas such as Tim Smith and Dean Collis. I do hope that Webster gives Johnston Crowther and Jowitt a decent chance to develop and eventually cement a place in the team but if they just get the odd substitute appearance late in games that are already lost they will be driven away. I know we have been relatively successful with other teams cast offs but we will never win anything with that signing policy.'"
So what, different time, different budget, different Coach.

For starters his grand total of SL games is err ONE.

Four tries in four superleague appearances, 6 tries in 5 first team appearances. But i take your point and whilst i'd have preferred it if he'd have stayed to see if he would have made the grade with us, and i personally think he will somewhere eventually, he decided to leave. He's gone, move on.

Did you get those stats from Wiki. I can only find 4 tries 3 of which were in one game. Also one of those games was against Hemel and two were speculator away games. So it's not quite what it appears.
Don't get me I'm a fan and reckon he should have got a run out half way through 2013 not the end, he was as good as anything we had at that point IMHO. However he's no superstar or if he is he's leaving it late. He's also not really a HB despite despite what Wiki says. Why we are getting carried away I don't know, we've lost much better and cried less.

No doubt about it, and he is what he is - a winger.
Problem with Kay is he was to utility and probably always will be - good in a way because he'll always get a wage but will probably exclude him from absolute top flight.
Hope he proves me wrong.

He played 3 superleague games plus the Hemel game in 2013 after making his debut the previous season. In addition to the cas hat-trick and the 2 against Hemel he also scored at Warrington. Have to agree he is now an out and out winger and having just turned 23 with the advent of some fulltime championship sides and the split divsions this is the season to see what he has got.

| I can never understand why people go on about ex players. So he played a few and scored a couple of tries and looked decent and wow he's scored against Wigan in a friendly. Tom Johnstone has broken into the first team picture pre season and he's staking a claim for a regular place that's great news and just what we need. I'm only interested in who wears and wants to wear the colours of my home town team and if he gives his all I'll back him to the hilt. Same as Owen, I saw him score a good few tries for us last season, people should concentrate on positives like that and support the lad. Alright he has deficiencies in his defence but he's not the only one but he can certainly finish and that's what I'm hoping to see plenty of this coming season, if he can score a bagfull of tries nobody will care if he's got a 3 year deal. The constant moaning by some nameless people even before we've started is frankly embarrassing. At least give the guys a chance to show what they can do, get behind them for Pete's sake.

| Think Kay 1st came to the fore during that 9's tournament a few years back. Walshaw also stood out. What ever happened to him?

His first game came in 2012, the easter monday game at Wigan. He did ok and wasn't seen again until the Hemel cup game the following season when he scored twice. He should have been given a decent go then but wasn't seen again until then end of the season when he played in 3 of the last 4 games. All history now.

| Do I remember Liam Kay? Not especially, no.
Like celebrities who die young, players who leave are often preserved in aspic, with their good qualities exaggerated and their potential vastly over-stated.

Probably realised that for the money Wakefield could afford to pay him, added to the fact that it looked like his game time was limited at the club decided to take up the offer from a perceived bigger club albeit at this moment in time in a lower league where he would be on more money and a chance to play regular football and getting the chance to full fill his potential and establish himself, loyalty is a fine thing but unfortunately you can't spend it in the supermarket, not the first and won't be the last sadly.

Yep, both Kay and Walshaw left for something that Wakey couldn't or wouldn't give them, regular game time.
I was never ever going to watch Wakey again when they sold Nigel Wright but a week later, I was there watching a them!
Players come and go, that's the Wakey way but we always seem to do ok in finding others to fill the gap.
