That is exactly what I said apart from the fact that I didn't attempt to absolve him of any blame or whitewash his past out of existence.
Now I agree I've said my bit and it's time to move on

| Quote: bren2k "I spoke with Ben the other day about his Herbalife and fitness ventures - he was very open about his past indiscretions and described himself in fairly colourful language; he also said that he's keen to make amends and turn his life, and people's perceptions of him, around.
I'm also told that he's making himself useful around the club, helping out the younger players and doing his bit in the community - I even saw him on Twitter the other night scheming to get Herbalife as a WTW sponsor.
He'll always have done what he did, but he does seem to be making a genuine attempt to reform himself - long may it continue.'"
Someone on here suggested you should be a politician - after that I can only assume you already are,
You are Nick Clegg and I want my £5!

First it was teacher, now it's politician - by a process of elimination, you'll guess my occupation in a few years time!
No £5 for you I'm afraid - I'm not Clegg, just someone who is prepared to admit that I was wrong.

Why were you wrong, everything you said at the time was correct and still is - nothing has changed as regards his past.
You can love him big style for the way he is now, I have no issues with that. However your post totally ignored all the old baggage - something you were totally unwilling to do 6 month ago when as I say you were pretty much correct other than the racist thing which I never bought into - can't recall if you did tbf.
It is possible to remain critical of someones past without it affecting your opinion of them in the present - surely?
Anyways it's not worth an argument with fishcakes and co which is what happens when you say it how it is so in a way I don't blame you

The bit I was wrong about was his potential negative influence on the club - it hasn't happened, so I was wrong. Hard to believe I know, given my usual infallibility, but there you go.
Back OT - did anyone go to the free fitness session and was it any good?

| I went along with about 14 others.....small start but i guess a lot of people would treat it with a bit of trepidation and let others see whats its like first. Ben, Kyle Wood, Russ Spiers and MMA fighter Gaz Firm ran the session which was superb. It was a very mixed fitness session with team games forming the nucleus. I took my 7 year old boy and his mate and they were royally entertained for the full hour by Tim Smith, Paul Johnson and Paul Aiton. They played handling games with them, kicking games etc and my son came away like a kid on Christmas morning.
I would thoroughly recommend anyone who wants to improve their fitness to attend next saturday at 2.30pm
The fitness levels were extremely varied, from a 16 year old lad, right through to a 60 year old woman.
Great effort by all concerned yesterday and lets hope a few more turn up to support the boys.

Would something like this be useful to a fat lardy assed 5ft 7in short ass topping the scales at 16 and a 1/2 stone, i quit smoking 5 years ago and piled on 3 stone which i cant shift and lack will power to do something about it (ironic as i had the will power to quit smoking) nowadays i struggle to make it up 2 flights of steps without a rest and break into a sweat just getting out of a chair, serious question by the way.

| Quote: bren2k "Ben and Tim Smith came down to do some training for our U13's team - it was a fantastic session and the lads really enjoyed themselves and got a lot out of it. Both players came up to the clubhouse afterwards and signed everything that was shoved under their noses, and posed for photos with every single player and quite a few Mums. It was very definitely above and beyond the call of duty.
To top it off, Ben attended our next home game to support the lads and went in to the dressing room to contribute to the pre-match and half-time team talks.
I think he's deadly serious about reforming himself and giving something back - fair play to the guy, he's proved many people wrong, myself included.'"
Yes its great to see. Even the Rovers fans acknowledged him last week. He plays with passion. Loses the plot on the odd occasion but I'd take that passion every day of the week...I too was a detractor before he came here but he has well and truly converted me...and the man can play!

| Quote: vastman "Whats happened to Ben Cockayne is a sad reflection of modern life and our desire to blame, shame and brand anyone and everyone. FWIW this is my opinion.
Ben is now casually branded as a racist in RL circles due to one incident as far as we know. When in reality he is not a racist but someone who behaved in a racist way ONCE. He apologised and payed the price, hence he is as far as we are aware not a serial racist - if he had not apologised and carried on racially abusing people then he would be a racist. Again as far as we are generally aware he didn't do this before the event and has not done it since - hence he isn't a racially motivated individual, if he were he simply couldn't be in the same room as Ali or Paul Aiton I'd have thought.
So the race issue was a red herring IMO, that's not down playing it but just giving it some context. The day I can't find it in my heart to forgive someone for a stupid or offensive remark made in the heat of the moment then I think I will have lost all humanity and an understanding of the varied thing we call human nature.
It's harder to defend the random acts of violence Ben has indulged in in the past - if I had my way he'd have done 18 month for what he did but I don't make the rules and I shouldn't judge as I don't have all the facts - however the law has seen to him so as long as he behaves from now on he warrants another chance. However for Ben this is his last chance or certainly his only chance at Wakefield - that must be made clear to him and i'm sure it has. We certainly shouldn't forget what an utter thug he was just because he's one of ours but no need to throw it in his face so long as he keeps up the good stuff.
So far so good for Ben, but he clearly has issues and always will so I will remain prepared for the worst but hope for the best.
in your dreams
