Top six 2005 - Trinity.: |
|
| Pleased with the performance. Made plenty of breaks and half breaks just failed to finish them off which comes down to match practice. 2 knock ons over line.
Thought defence was pretty solid other than burrows and watkins ghosting through a couple of times.
Pretty decent hit out.
Southern was all over and very involved first 30 mins.
All players contributed and there are positive signs.
Smith and John linked up well and passing links looked ok for first game.
Surprised with wood as he caused a few problems.

| Probably what's to be expected from a new team, defensively very solid for the most part, Rob Burrow making a couple of trademark busts hat lead to two Leeds tries.
Isaac John looked lively but Smith looked a bit quiet, Kyle Wood came on and played very well, Andy Ellis was excellent with his distribution and general play. Dean Collis scored a try that was down to pace, agility and strength something we've not had in a centre for a long time.
Morton looked weak in defence and was replaced by Walshaw after missing a straight one on one which lead to a 2nd half Rhinos try.
Mathers looked very shaky under the high ball but worked his nuts off bringing the ball out from within out 10mtr line.
Mellars looked big and strong in the other centre and Cockayne was very solid and hard working.
Southern was tough in defence and certainly axed a few, Johnson, Amor & Wilkes were very solid but Raleigh got bossed by their forwards and came up with a few handling errors. Trout, Walshaw and Wildey all stood up well in attack and defence.
We bombed a couple of try scoring opportunities and Leeds got a couple of soft tries but all in all it was a fair score line and reflected the game. Smith & John need more ame time together and Wood could be a very astute signing who might overtake Smith if he fails to fire.
Morton didn't do himself justice or any favours and might find himself losing out to someone else if he continues to look defensively vulnerable in the friendlies.
Raleigh probably played himself out of the starting line up although he did put his hand up for a fair share of work it just wasn't of particularly good quality.
I'm not disappointed, we are going to be hard to break down and will hurt people in the tackle. We will get better the more games we play and the understanding between the players grows.
That's also true of our attacking game, we did show plenty of ability to ship the ball around with some deft three quarter line passing moves but timing and cohesion will improve with games.
All that said, I'm happy enough and with Aiton, Lauitiiti, Kirmond and Washbrook still to add to the team it's rather promising.

Think Raleigh was carrying a hand injury for most of the game on twitter stated it looked like a dislocated finger. Overall very pleased plenty to work with but thought we looked pretty solid.

| The kicking game needs a tonne of work.
Game was a bit dull at times, but good signs from most players.

| Smith was impressive to start and was bossing it around a bit then got moved out wide and quietened down. Some decent kicks from John and southern displayed the quality he will bring. Didnt see what others did with wood he threw the ball to the floor 3 times. Matty James looked poor and didn't seem to want to get involved and Morton looked like he was playing touch and pass
Overall though some really good signs and some quality still to have a run out. Still believing it will be a quality season for us.
Still need a couple of props

That's an excellent analysis of the game from where I was stood - all in all, it looks very promising.

There's Fox to come in as well, agree with the above, encouraging signs from the lads and by the looks of today the brand of rugby is going to be quite exciting, especially when they get to know each other a bit better. Hopefully we'll see them improve throughout the warm up games.

| Looking at that Wakefield kit from a distance was like watching Wakefield from a bygone era. It really does look like the old Adidas kit of the Wally Lewis era.

| Just about right for a friendly.
Steve Southern was a tackling machine, good finish from Collis, John looked lively at times, could tell we weren't match fit but was a decent hit out to say it's a new team and their first time playing together. Our kicking game was pretty poor in comparison to Leeds who used the wind to their advantage. Once things gel and they get match fit we may see a decent side. I agree that the full kit looks really good though!
Thought Moore went well for Leeds, Teapot was pretty poor, but Burrow was just too good. Lots of positives from today all in all, good turnout from Wakey too.

| I think you've shown enough to indicate a top 8 challenge this season especially with so mnay new lads and new coach.
I'm surprised tat none of you have mentioned no22 Trout who i thought tackled his nadgers off and was willing with the ball just a question of a fixed position for him due mainly to his size.
Young Wood off the bench went well for yer and there's plenty of potential even before you add Big Ali and the other missing lads.

| fwiw here is my summary....
i was quite impressed with smith early on, but he faded into oblivion after 30mins. isaac had a couple of nice touches but did not get involved enough (or just didn't get the ball)
collis & mellars seemed ok and after a quiet 1st half cockayne was pretty good in the second half
mathers was mathers, he tried hard and did get involved. he will become an asset for us.
wood was ok from the bench.
i thought we went downhill when ellis and southern were taken off, and looked better when they returned. i hope this was just a blip and not a prediction for the future!!
wilkes and johnson ran the ball in well.
overall, we did try to pass the ball about, but there were still some basic problems with our defensive pattern. ok, morton had a bit of a shocker but he was left exposed on a couple of occasions, it was just like last season at times defensively.
a run out, we need time to gel and get our timing together. agar said he wasn't happy with the defensice pattern, so at least he has seen it, hopefully we can sort it.
still hate losing to leeds though

| On the positive side, I thought John was impressive early on, Collis put in some good 1st half tackles and the team as a whole was pretty solid defensively up the middle throughout the game. Good breaks from Mariano and then Walshaw were wasted. The weather was nice.
On the negative side, Morton and Wood are still little boys trying to play in a mans game. Our kick offs don't get any better whilst our kick off recieving was shocking.
Rob Burrow was the difference between the sides.
