| Never played on 3g or 4g it was always grass in my day. Progress or not I stand by my injury comment at Widnes, TURNED ANCLES AS I REMEMBER.

Again that was because it's a 3G pitch, not a 4G, although it's a long time since I've heard any complaints about their pitch. It caused a bit of a storm at the time but Widnes don't appear to have any more injuries than anyone else so I suspect it was overblown at the time. BV a great pitch but it does cut up in the wet snd csn be rock hard in summer regardless of how green it appears. It's a shame but its loss is a worthwhile sacrifice imho.

Going back a number of years our playing surface was best in the league bar none, I think our grounds man went elsewhere (for some reason I want to say he went to work for Wigan Athletic & Warriors but not too sure). Still, our pitch is probably about Average now, I think in 10 years time every playing surface in pro sport will be artificial which in a way is a shame but I guess we have to move with the times!

| It allows the club to generate extra income for use of the pitch and it would be wonderful to see ourselves as a club with a decent income for a change. For me, that is reason enough to put up with the presence of different lines for different sports, as per Toronto.

| My only reservation is that the two teams that used them in super league both got relegated so didnt do their playing style any good

| Unfortunately it’s a no brainer isn’t it. I like grass always have and we all know that Bellevue has by far one of the best grass pitches of all the grounds around. But grass has its limitations. How many games a year can the pitch take? Certainly not a 12 month a year week in week out program. So unless we want to stick to a trinity only stadium then 4g it has to be.
The stadium has to be able to fulfil its commercial potential, let’s say that at some point we did get relegated (Never going to happen) then we’d be playing in a over the top, shell of a ground with little to no income/support. Then at least the stadium would hopefully be able to finance itself through other sports fixtures and not become a huge burden to the club like it has in the past. I don’t remember the council buying the ground off us originally (70’s/80’s) I think because it was making trinity too much money?
We will get used to the 4g and in a generation nobody will remember the grass. For me it’s all about being here in another generation and I think this will do that.

| Quote: CM Punk "Having played American Football on 3G, 4G & Grass pitches, I can say that 4G is miles ahead of 3G and not that far behind grass in terms of comfort. I believe Widnes is a 3G pitch, which is where you get the rubber crumb balls on the surface (A teammate of mine once got some of those stuck behind their eyeball, that was not a pleasant injury) whereas 4G doesn't need them. It may need to be watered pre-game during summer to reduce friction burns, but other than that it's as good as a good grass pitch.'"
Widnes’ is and always has been a 4G pitch since the grass was ripped up.

I was going by this article from 2011 when it was installed. It could be wrong and things have moved on anyway. One thing for sure though is that 4G pitches are fully synthetic and i personally have never been a fan of playing on artificial pitches. If you’ve got a niggle it tends to aggravate it.

Wonder why the RFU poured 50 million into an artificial pitch fund to push pro clubs to replace there playing surface?

| Surely the Aussies have a different problem.
They don't need arteficial grass because, a) they have loads of land so a community stadium could be just build next door. B) they need irrigation to improve the longevity of their pitch not arteficial grass c) AFL and soccer grounds already have some artificial grounds but the ones I've seen are predominantly in Melbourne where the weather is more like ours.

Interesting article. I’m a little concerned re the paragraph
4G “Synthetic grass without a need for rubber crumb It is important to note that technologies beyond 3G (4G, 5G, 6G etc.) have not been yet recognised by sports governing bodies.
5G Synthetic grass without a need for rubber crumb
6G Synthetic grass without a need for rubber crumb
This article is dated March 2019, I’m not aware if any sport’s governing bodies have approved the G4 system.
