Wasn't it Ted Heath Government who set the wheels in motion but were ousted before it came into play? We still had a Wakefield City Council around 1972.

Maybe I'm getting mixed up with the introduction of the post code with Tony Benn.

The Metropolitan Counties and Cities Act was introduced in Parliament in 1972 and the new metropolitan counties, metropolitan district councils came into force on April 1st 1974.

Completely unviable option, other side of York, about an hours drive and that's without any traffic..
Really pleased for York they've had a hard time similar to us when it comes to there ground situation although maybe not to the same extent and I don't think there struggle has been going on quite as long as ours!
If I remember rightly they demolished there ground on the promise a new one was to be built only for the council or developers to go back on there word which was diabolical! Don't know the full ins and outs of there situation.

| It is utterly galling to see York getting this, though good luck to them. How is it that our Council are so inept? We seem virtually alone in their abject inability to get anything achieved regarding facilities for it's flagship sports team. No disrespect at all to Cas but it should have it's own council. Wakefield Council should be sorting Wakefield issues like this out. It is dismal and Box should be making this a priority now. Several examples of recent successful projects have been seen lately in spite of austerity. Get it sorted!

| The amount of ducking and diving the council have done over the years with regards to this issue, it makes you wonder if it is a bit more than just our council being inept. Weren't they also part of the meeting that agreed Newcold wouldn't count to the trigger point? Hopefully they will prove us wrong and take MC up on his offer to loan the money for a stadium.

| Quote Miro="Miro"With all due respect to Featherstone R, they are a small village club outside of the top flight whereas the City of Wakefield comprises Horbury, Ossett, Wrenthorpe, Outwood, Lupset, Durker, Sandal, Eastmoor, Agbrigg, Kettlethorpe, Netherton etc. etc. As for Castleford, it appears they are are well on their way to getting a stadium plus sporting facilities. Therefore the argument that the district needs to build three stadiums or one super stadium geographically suitable to all is something of a red herring today.
The Metropolitan District of Wakefield encompassing such a large area was a stupid, ill thought out concept invented by some crazy tory politician back in the 70s. But surely, it need not be an obstacle any more.'"
As Sandal Cat says, the council should help us get a perfect 106 agreement ala Cas. However, the point that there are three teams in the district all in fairly old grounds is not a red herring at all. Just think back to five years ago or so when the council offered all three clubs £2 million each towards their grounds. If that was for one team or one stadium then you've already got half the money and the rest would have been pretty easy to find at that point with no petty squabbling between all the various parties. It's a bit disrespectful to just refer to Featherstone as a village club as well, they got over 3k for the Fax game on Sunday which isn't far off some of our crowds.

Yes, five years ago, this is now, things have changed. As for Featherstone, it's a village team not in the top flight and it's stadium is wholly adaquate for where they are today.

Things haven't changed that much. Not a single brick has been laid at either stadium, plus Lateral have only agreed to build Cas a 10,000 capacity stadium and they could definitely use some more money for a bigger stadium. They can't really put money towards one team without putting the same amount towards the other one otherwise you'd have people somewhere kicking off.

The difference between us and Castleford is that there is a perfect legal agreement in place that should deliver the Stadium. No stadium then no development and no developers profit.
We have a UU that is far from perfect and I would feel more relaxed if we tore up the UU and replaced it with a perfect agreement as promised by Peter Box in the Council Chamber but as of today we have sweet FA and no real prospect of getting anything.

Yeah wouldn't argue with any of that. They should do their best to sort us a watertight agreement just like they have with Cas. I was just pointing out that it is easier for York Council to build a community stadium as there are no competing factions under their jurisdiction.
