Quote deeHell="deeHell"Absolutely ridiculous statement without any evidence to back it up. Widdop is an excellent prospect no doubt, but that's all he is a [iprospect loyality to the red white and blue, good

| Quote jonh="jonh"After all that you come out with a statement like this which basically confirms the fact you think Widdop is a better player?! All that statement suggests is Widdop is the better player in your opinion, but Murphy could be as good as him if he was in the same system, so what is your problem?
The Aussies were the ones to hype him not the English. The English only took notice once he was named in the Toyota cup team of the year. Gus Gould was the one last week commenting on being a future Australian International.
While I agree he is not a first team regular he has come through as first reserve which with Billy Slater at 1, and 2 of the best centres in the game in the back line the 2 positions he specialises in is no minor achievement.
Widdop has pace, a step, great hands and creativity a good kicking game and a great defence. The stats you provide show he has more yards going forward per game than the best attacking player of his generation.
I do not agree stating it is arrogant to say I rate him as the best man for the job, in fact I think it is very naive to suggest he is not worth a spot off the back of him only playing 2 games of first grade. It has happened before and will happen again.
As I said he has come through a much tougher system, a much more pressured system and a far intenser system, he would be a 2 season first grade player at most SL clubs, is that not enough? If not players like Sam Tomkins and Kyle Eastmond need to sit out International selection for a couple more years prior to them justifying selection.
I would love to know who you think in the England backs would get near a spot in the Melbourne backs by the way?'"
I said nothing to confirm that I thought Widdop was a better a player. For sake of repeating myself I'll explain again. [size=150 Widdop has played 2 games, and that just isn't enough imo[/size to be selected for international rugby. He is playing in probably in the best Club team in the world. Its a lot easier to impress in that environment. Any potential weakness in his game has not been tested, we have not seen how he will perform in the face of adversity, how he will handle sustained pressure. There is a good chance that these are conditions he will be playing under come the autumn internationals.
In defense of Murphy, he has played a decent number of games in a very average team. The fact he has stood out in a poor team says a lot. He has had mini dips in form and shown he has the character to produce his 'A' game in the face of adversity.
U20 teams in both Oz and here are full of potential talented players. A lot of them never make the grade because they can't make the step up and play to that level consistently. especially in the face of adversity.
I'll go back to my point about Ryan Tandy (which you ignored). If a National League standard player can make the Storm first grade, then a lot of other players playing SL could. Given the right environment and opportunities it's amazing what you can get out of a player.

Yes you were clearly right Widdop did bugger all today was garbage and certainly did not deserve his shirt............oh hang on.........
Excellent game, vision creativity pace, great hands the take and kick on again at pace for the Tomkins try was sublime as were a few of his passes especially the one that was called forward for the Hall try, which was not in a million years.
Regards Tandy by the way, i did not he was in contention for the best back line in the game, always thought he was a forward. Jeff Lima was signed from France now one of the best Props in the world at Melbourne just a point to make with how players improve in that system as well.
If you cannot admit the lad is by far the best option at 1 for England then you are too stubborn for your own good.
Had we a wealth of riches in that position I could understand your issue but we do not, and for all the doubters Widdop totally justified his selection and will have to do a lot wrong to not have that shirt for the next 10 years.

I went to the match in part to see what Widdop was like, since I had no idea at all. While I thought he was good, he was not really tested defensively, so I'm reserving judgment on him really. I was certainly impressed with his pace and sidestep; I can see the Billy Slater influence there. I'm glad he got the chance to play but I'd like to see him up against the Aussies before deciding whether he is good enough, in spite of the fact that we have virtually no options at all at fullback.
