I am one of the biggest critics but today I could not fault the effort and skill of the team. They were head and shoulders better than what we have played for the majority of last season. We are not the completed article but we are starting from a more solid performance.than the last two seasons.
I thought our fitness levels were better.
I am sorry but once Wood is fit then Crowther should be our third choice hooker. I know that will upset some but he is not a number 9 currently.

Quote: lampyboy "It's extremely disappointing, we should have had the game wrapped up, it's not the first time and definitely not the last.
The problem for me is that we never seem to move on and you know before the season end we will be in the same position at least another 3 to 4 times.
I'm finding it increasingly difficult to accept and to be totally honest it's becoming a given.
Before the game CC said we are targeting a top eight finish, that disappointing and accepting once again a mediocrity.
What's wrong with saying we are looking to finish in the top 5 or 6 and expect to shake things up.
Its the first game of the season but we seem to be thinking that 8 will do nicely.'"

Yes that angered me too, statements like that just puts me off

Really disappointed watch the match late last night after work. Can’t believe we let that game go, seems our edge defence is still lacking. As soon as Leeds got there noses in front I just knew we wouldn’t come back. If it wasn’t for 2 Exceptional Johnstone tries we’d of been way off. Leeds had more intensity in defence. We can’t keep doing a Hail Mary to the left edge and hoping tupou or Johnstone produce the goods we need more consistency through other areas. I am just disappointed as we should of been away by half time and just let the game go

The stats tell some interesting stories

I didn't think Fifita was that effective by his own standards but he made 29 tackles without missing one and made 12 carries for an average of 8 metres which is the most of all the forwards.

Crowther made 34 tackles missing 1 but only made 1 run with the ball. Which was a significant one.

Ashurst made 42 tackles and missed none.

All the forwards apart from Fifita made 6 metres average gain or less which is low and tells you how hard we found the roll forward in the pack against Leeds rush defense.

But the most telling stat is errors = 17.
3 times we had the ball stolen and at least once gave penalty away when we had the ball.
That made the difference in possession and by effect our opportunities to score.

Right edge defence more than left. Maybe it’s because most teams potent attacking is on their left and our right but we leaked a lot on the right edge last season and yesterday we continually got targeted down the right. We just don’t seem to number up right on the right edge and leave the cut out option or an overlap. It happens on the left but more so the right. There’s also some good things. The passing for Seniors try was top draw on the right.

Quite a lot regarding Jordan, look at points conceded when jordan and joe aren’t on the field.

But the most telling stat is errors think it was fairly obvious before the game that there forwards would be stronger than ours and our backs would be our strength. In terms of the stats pretty much summed up the game for me - our forwards battled hard but didn’t make much ground comparatively. Brad Dwyer was outstanding for leeds, but playing with a pack that was on top throughout.

Tbh really enjoyed the game but we really missed battye and Hampshire/jowitt and wood. Highlighted what we’ve all commented on we need another strike front row forward.

Great game to watch and there can’t be many years when the try of the season competition was sorted in the first half of the first game

B0J042 is entitled to say what he thinks .They were the same players apart from Lino that finished 2nd from bottom .So it's obvious we are going to be some were in the bottom 4 after one close season .The Question is ,could you see a improvement from last year ,and for me it's a yes ,but still a lot to work on
