| I have just been checking on Parliamentary protocol in respect of MP's from another constituency, involving him/herself in an issue or matter of a neighbouring constituency. I came across a very useful 'Standard Note' submitted to the House of Commons Library by Richard Kelly in January 2009.
I was basically hoping to catch new MP Alec Shelbrooke out a little in respect of his public and vocal involvement in Newmarket, which of course does fall outside his constituency... what I did found out was quite interesting!
It would seem that if Alec Shelbrooke MP has been approached by people living in his constituency, which I suspect he indeed has, then getting involved in this matter would be within excepted protocol and etiquette BUT he should have been keeping Ed Balls MP 'informed' of his intentions and any actions taken, speeches made, media interviews etc, on an issue not in his constituency but of concern to his constituents! I wonder if Ed got a note from Alec after his Radio Leeds interview or indeed any correspondence on this matter, as the etiquette urges he should have done/do?
However, this section in the note really made me smile, dedicated to the issue of planning matters.
Quote: "2.3 Other issues
Planning
Nevertheless, there are obvious drawbacks to becoming involved in matters which may pit one constituent against another. The authors of How Parliament Works, which is a highly regarded guide to Parliament written by clerks, wrote the following
A new MP is always warned by colleagues not to take up planning cases; planning has its own machinery at both local and national level, and the applicants and the objectors are usually all constituents; to favour one is to disadvantage another.33[/i'"
I wonder if I should e-mail Alec a copy of this Standard Note!

| Perhaps it is time for an organised, well attended gathering of support, at the site with relevant media informed, thus enabling the more articulate to get our points accross.
Sharing a platform didn't get our side accross very well, perhaps some kind of walk from BV.

Once again, and without wishing to curb natural enthusiasm towards this issue, unless there is a specific goal to be achieved in such an event - which has to be far more than just making us feel better for doing something - then it is dangerous to try and run such an event.
We are now the ones with something to lose, and we consider that the best way to get through this is to lay low. Any amount of publicity runs the risk of further empowering the support for the scheme.
Our goal is to ensure that there is support within the right people, rather than just generally.
I'm just explaining why we are not doing more publicly than some expect - it's not because we don't consider other ideas or that we are avoiding our commitments, more a case of strategising!

I think you should
Don't know if you (or others) have heard Phil running rings round him in the Radio Leeds interview - and his NIMBY responses If not you can listen by going to Radio Leeds and then Listen again to the Andrew Edwards and Georgey Spanswick show and the Wednesday 26.05.2010 show
It starts about 1 hour 10 mins into the show ... think today is probably the last day for listening to it.

But what the heck was Richard Kelly doing in the House of Commons library?
I was actually just killing time before a meeting with Gordon Brown, the library has a good section on Middle East politics which I was browsing through ahead of brokering a peace treaty with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas!

| I've e-mailed council and wakey express to condemn the half-truths and downright lies and scaremongeriing of the NIMBYs. Council have replied, and seem keen to hold a neutral and balanced position (a good thing, IMO). Wakey Express asked for my address so they could consider it for publication - so maybe I'll get the NIMBYs knocking on my door!
Anybody seen a rugbyball around, or has it been kicked into touch?

| Thanks for your e-mail regarding ‘Look North’ broadcast on 26 May.
I understand you feel the programme is overly Leeds centric, failing to adequately report news from across Yorkshire, such as the number of people who signed a petition in favour of the new stadium at Wakefield.
Choosing the content of our news bulletins is often a difficult and complicated process. In making their decisions our editors need to take several different factors into consideration including whether the news is breaking and the perceived level of public interest in the subject matter.
We appreciate that our audience hold a wide range of opinions, and this, coupled with the subjective nature of our editorial decisions means we'd never expect everyone to agree with every decision we take.
I’d like to take this opportunity to assure you that I’ve recorded your comments onto our audience log. This is an internal daily report of audience feedback which is circulated to many BBC staff including senior management, producers and channel controllers.
The audience logs are seen as important documents that can help shape decisions about future programming and content.
Thanks once again for taking the time to contact us.
Kind Regards
Ciaran McConnell
