He has said for a long time that he wasn't sure he'd be able to go round one more time.
He's either stepping down and going back home or taking a last big pay off somewhere.

To be honest announcing it without telling the club he was going to is very David as well!

I think one of the biggest things is thanks to his looks, playing style and personality he is the favorite player of many of the younger fans as well, there is a connection there. That is a very hard thing to replace quickly.

However I must point out that Dave has been an ever present for the last two years and we have finished near bottom twice, so you could argue that we need a new talisman?

I’d agree with that and a strange way to do it.

Thete comes a time for every player. He has produced some great moments and has been a great player for the club. However his best years are behind him so thanks to Dave for giving them to us.

I would also add that the club ought to also respect some of the others that are leaving and announce their departure also. Love em or losth em they have been here a while and been good servants

He says end of an era - could easily mean the stadium.
Possibly a clever marketing ploy to get a few extra fans in, before announcing the big news that not only will he do another year; his brother will join him. Feel good factor increases & would undoubtedly paper over some of the concerns about the past 12 months.
