Cas do pay big money to several promising 16 year olds, as you know its not a perfect science, some do go on to the next level - the vast majority do not. ( there is a stat out there saying that to date only 3 % of players who played under 15 international Rugby League have gone on to play SL ) So its a big cost to pay big money to several 16 year olds only to find that 3 out of 100 goes on to play SL.
Wakefield won the under 18`s title with a squad that cost the club less than 20 thousand pounds for the season. So your comments about our youth system harming players is at best just wrong. Our staff have identified players at low cost that other clubs have no interest in and turned them into championship winning players. ( The easy option is to throw money at under 15 internationals and hope ) Other clubs have bought the ` better` players and yet we have turned the average into the best.
Our under 20`s this season will go very well, as will our under 18`s. By the way I do not know of ` several ` players from the same age group that are playing 1st team and would suggest that Dale Morton will have played more SL games than any other of his age group from any club.
Also note that 9 of the championship winning team are now full time 1st team squad members.
Like all clubs some parts of our club are not great but our junior rugby set up is not one. The staff employed by the club are first class.'" thats just a crazy claim
Morton has played 16 times, Kallum Watkins is a year younger and has played 18 times, despite a terrible injury last year which curtailed his season 6 games in, having played 5 of those. Chris Clarkson, the same age group has played 13 times, Chris Tuson has played 21, Liam Farrell 16, Liam Watts 29, Andrew Dixon 22, Tom Briscoe 51,

You would know a crazy claim when you saw one - you have made enough of them.

| Belly, Milner, Holmes, Thompson were 3 of 5 lads that qualified from the Scholarship a couple of years ago, all 3 have played first team at Cas and looked ready for it. I would suggest Trinity need to look at the 3 years coaching in the Scholarship and the financials of that investment.
If you have quality players at the club for 3 years there should in my opinion be no way you lose them to a club like Cas, but as I understood it opportunity seemed to be a major factor above the level of a junior contract.

| Scholarship rep teams announced and again no reps from Wakefield yet players who were once at Wakefield have made the cut.
The system is failing the club.
Congrats to Rocky, Mopsey!

Genuine question here as my knowledge of the junior game is poor, but is it a case of rival clubs offering more money to these kids who have moved on rather than something elemently wrong with the system bringing then through?

So, you back the theory that the club bred a team to win a meaningless championship rather than develop talent for the first team squad?

Yes, the club clearly held players back to a lower level in order to have a pop at winning the title (which they did, and I enjoyed a good few of the games they played).
Trinity padded the 21's with cast off not good enough for other clubs generally so they could field a team, rather than pushing the Academy players as much as they should have.
A very short term view in my opinion.

thanks john he puts hell of lot of work in himself, but we know the pitfalls and he has to keep improving.
regards the 18s once we started winning kear then turned up and decided we should try to win it, we picked the side and the 20s were left as cannon fodder. most of them kids were with me at certain times when juniors and were let down when they joined the club, they just didnt develop at wakefield from what i did with them at amateur level.kear was advised who to sign and took no notice, he wanted his say. of the current crop, walshaw, greyson, slater, could push on if they want it enough.
truth be known ted and eric watched every game and the season before kear didnt give a toss.

I don't know much about the wakey youth setup but for some reason you don.t seem to be promoting many of your own youngsters at the moment. Do you think the club is as commited to it's youth policy as it should be or do you think they have looked at a quick fix overseas policy in the last few years ?.
Also I know it's a big risk with the kids as it is a low percentage on the ones that make it from say under 18s to SL, but I know Cas have been throwing a fair big of cash at the kids since we got relegated and I am also pretty sure cas have attracted a good few from under wakeys nose just because they see a better path of progression at cas than quite a few other SL teams. Do you think this is an area Wakey should be looking to improve in ?.

What happened at cas with Gledhill was just one of those things, were we right to let him go i don't know. Very much like Liam watts at hull kr (who the club were deffinatly right to let go at the time). Please dont think i have put this post to look for an arugument, I was just asking a question if people think Wakey are doing enough with youth development as to an outsider looking in there does not seem to be too many youngsters coming through the system there.

Correct but the point is there are several lads who were on the Wakefield Scholarship, but Wakefield could not retain them, which is the problem.
Same thing as the Academy Internationals, a pattern is forming.

Is it because of money or that they can't see a pathway to the first team?
