Quote: Catnap "So it hasn't just been built because of the Hepworth then? it was the Warfedale a long time before the Hepworth was finished and possibly before building commenced, I know because we used to supply it with meat for the meals when it first opened, and then they dropped us for microwave meals because they couldn't get enough trade to make propper meals viable.'"

Eh? I said the new pub is called the Ruddy Duck and is a new build on the opposite side of the canal to where Calderfords used to be. The Warfedale, like you asked me before is the old Jolly Sailor & re-opened up not long after they found out the museum was going to be built there, ie that was the reason they purchased it and opened it.

This location makes me nervous (sorry but it does) surely there is somewhere nearer the .
I mean come on there is loads of derelict land in Wakefield it's not a full employment situation out there.
Lack of a train station upsets me too.
Am i the only one?
Onward and upwards though i hope/pray.
I'll be there even if we move to the end of the earth e.g Glasshoughton, so it won't put me off nor i guess most of you lot.

Of course there's land closer to the city but any land big enough for a stadium is going to cost a premium and also who's going to pay for this land and then build this stadium for us, I don't know many people with a spare 15million. Surely you understand the mechanics behind us being able to move to a new stadium.

And to answer you're question, no it doesn't make me nervous at all, as long as they'll be well organised public transport to the ground, which there will be it will be great. If it was the 50's where people walked to the ground from the town and people relied on trains to get to games I'd agree with you but it isn't. It's only about 30 minutes walk from town anyway, done it many a time.

I don't know about land prices but if you say so then OK, it does seem fashionable to avoid town at all costs.
Does everyone drive to the game now then? i see plenty of cars but i'm not so sure about that one.
30 mins from town then back again to get a train to wherever is a ball ache, don't pretend it isn't. Maybe I'm in the minority of 1 which I hope I am, but it's all strikes me as excuses to sit at home and watch Super (not so Super) Sunday.

I only said if you wanted to walk it's 30 minutes, surely you'd catch the bus back into town if you were catching a train.

Not sure I agree that this ' all strikes me as excuses to sit at home and watch Super (not so Super) Sunday', if people are looking for excuses they can do that now if they want to, instead of going down to Belle Vue it's hardly the most family friendly appealing ground to go to. People either get in their motors or catch a bus and train to get to a game, who walks up to the ground from town nowadays anyway. I don't know about anyone else but out of all the people I've spoke to at the ground and pub etc I've never heard anyone say they can't see themselves going to games at Newmarket or it's going to be a pain getting there.

It's nothing to do with being fashionable in avoiding town , it's to do with having to have enough land to build a huge industrial estate that comes along with the stadium, without that we don't have a stadium.

Read the Inspector's report to the SoS - he states clearly why it wasn't feasible to build it in or just outside the city centre.

How many people catch the train to watch Wakefield. Has my time machine worked? Am in the 1940s?
Seriously, I think this is a great location for rugby. Anywhere in town would lack parking. Would cost a premium. And clog up the city with traffic.

Buses down Aberford Road are pretty regular. I can't see a problem.

The Park would have been the best option but sadly that wasn't to be. Newmarket is a good location and our only option end of.

Newmarket was/is the only viable way of providing the WMDC with a stadium within the next 20 years, unless someone with £15M comes out of the woodwork.

What's more I honestly believe it has much more wide spread benefits than j320 or any other pipe dream either us or CT have EVER come up with. It's benefits include employment, education & sporting infrastructure. All on a patch of land which was a former pit site. All this & it's completely in the control of an independent not for profit agency, which means affordable rent for all that use it, rather than a situation like Doncaster/Leigh/Salford. Where councils/private investors sought to reclaim monies asap through high rent/domination of income streams. Where as NM will be funded by the developer as part of the 106. The community trust will have a small/no mortgage to cover, so rents will be very reasonable.

There have only ever been 2 motivations for being against this IMO.
1. It encroached on your property.
2. You're associated with CT & it scares the hell out of you. If this idea had come from CT do you think Alf et al would be the environmental warriors they have portrayed themselves as over the past 2.5 years.

I think January will bring the beginning of addition partners being added to the scheme i.e big businesses signing up for the larger units- every little helps eusa_whistle.gif

Well it all sounds perfect then, wonderful location that everyone will drive or get the bus to, cheap land on the back of a large and needed industrial park. Multi sports use to get people involved.
It's all going to be at a great fair cost to Trin. Sounds like we should pre order memberships now like Greenbay do because demand is going to be massive, and the proposed 12K isn't going to be big enough.
I hadn't realised how out of touch i was using public transport. I just look at the map an think it seems a distance from home. I guess it's probably just nostalgia. I also don't (and probably never will) understand why Wakefield council aren't desperate to give us space and money near town to get the place on the up. I think it would bring needed investment and people in along with building "brand Wakefield" that i feel is important to stave off becoming a Leeds suburb.
I don't pretend to have a fully fleshed out and better solution so Newmarket may well be for the best, still makes me nervous though.

I believe theres also going to be a park and ride scheme. Think this may run from existing bus station in centre of town? not 100% sure but if so. As long as you can get in town... you will be able to get to ground relatively easilY?

Nothing wrong with that - I hope that Mr Glover and co feel similarly nervous, so that they don't become complacent about the magnitude of the task they have in front of them.

NM is the best and most viable solution to two decades of problems at WTW, but it's not a magic bullet - it will take hard work, enthusiasm and no small amount of skill to make it a success; let's hope all of those things go our way.

Have you been to Wigan since they moved.......yes it's a fantastic stadium, but it is right on the edge of the town centre, like you want for us, which might be okay for the locals using public transport, but for those travelling in cars (the majority I would hazard a guess), it is a nightmare to get to and from. We went for the play-off match a few years ago, and it took me an hour to get from Wakefield to the outskirts of Wigan town centre, and then ANOTHER hour to get from there to the ground !!!!!!!!!

I take it plans have been produced regarding roads. I live nearby and at the moment there is only one road and with hopefully 8-10k crowds coming out it will be absolutely chaos.

As for local pubs .....?...Spindle Tree shut, there is The Thatched and Wheatsheaf at Stanley, Rosebud and Club in Carlton and a few in Rothwell....Obviously there will be a few bars in the ground.
