Thought the club release was a bit of a back handed compliment, saying Warrington identified his pace but then loaned him out to other clubs and now let us sign him. I await his debut with anticipation.

IMO this is exactly the type signing we want. Players who have something to prove, and a hunger to get back to top flight RL.

Kear's "projects" got us a long way before, welcome aboard Kev.

Quote: sixtogo "Well hes fast. Thats where the good stuff ends.

Pointless signing cos he'll never get the ball anyway.'"

That is not where the good stuff ends, while his speed is obvious to everyone what is maybe not so obvious is his ability to take advantage of his pace in various ways.  He positions himself to make a break, has a great ability to offset the defence by varying his pace, has a great instinctive awareness of how to manipulate the defender with body shape, swerve, in and out, and he certainly doesn't lack bottle when going low for a try.

His defence is obviously a concern but he has shown over the last two years that he is willing to work on it and has the ability to improve. It's an aspect of the game he will always be troubled by but it's also something he that can get better with good coaching and experience.

His signing will give us a cutting edge and we will have an ability to score from anywhere provided we can get the ball to him.

Happy with this signing and agree its the type of signing we want.

When he first broke through at Warrington I thought he was goign to be something special. I still think he can but suspect he has confidence issues and hopefully Wakey could be just the place to get over them.

Good news IMO

Went well at Quins and I think Trinity could be just the place for Penny to continue building his career.

Good signing for me, arguably your best to date for 2011.

Problem in defence. But not only will he score you tries with his pace he'll score them from a high ball to the corner. He has a massive vertical leap and with a good kicker could but a good source of tries for you next year.

If he plays on the left wing with Millard inside him then we should look to put the high ball to them quite alot, all we need is someone with the kicking game to get it to them.

I remain to be convinced about Penny. I never really rated him, always thought he was just fast and also too cocky (think the Leo-Latu incident and him skipping over the line when he scored a hatrick against us). His main issues are his defence and his handling, his handling is a particular problem when he gets too giddy and enthusiastic or stressed when on the back foot.

But, I agree it could be a good signing for us and that Kear and Wakey is the best place for him to be now in order to build his career and confidence. He does have a point to prove after all the hype and having an innate talent for sprinting, so yes, one of us!

I hope I'm very plesantly surprised.

a spot on assessment in my view.

A loss for Warrington in my opinion. The problem with Penny was he was given a contract by Paul Cullen that by all accounts was quite a good one and one that Tony smith thought could be better spent elsewhere i.e two or three academy players for the price of Penny's contract is good business to him (and you can see the merits of it when Penny was just a kid himself).

Opposition fans may console themselves by reeling out the he "cant tackle cant catch" line truth is he made a high profile knock on in a challenge cup game not long after scoring an absolute blinder and he recieved plenty of stick from the saints fans...and its just stuck with him i'm afraid. Ive seen Francis Meli and Ade Gardner make more basic handling and defensive errors than Penny. Plus Penny played alongsde Matt King when he was absolute dog pooh or Chris Bridge when he was relatively new to the centre position.

however your team goes next season turning up to Watch Kevin Penny goose all and sundry will help the days go by.

and when you play us if theres a foot race between Penny and our wingers we wont win it

I hope the home crowd at least give him time to settle in I will,

while I haven't seem him play for some time, its with out doubt that his blistering pace is an asset for us and we should play to that, for all the blundering defense we have had to put up with this season he can be forgiven as long as he puts the effort in, welcome Kevin to the Trin roller coaster

The one thing you will get from Penny, as well as his blistering pace, is 100% effort and enthusiasm. He will let in some soft tries, but he will score some scorchers too.

His defense is suspect, but IMO not so bad as some would have you believe. As has been said, he was playing outside some guy who looked like Matt King for a while (thankfully the real Matt King eventually turned up, but too late for Penny unfortunately). As a result he would often, through no fault of his own, find himself defending against two or three attackers which would inevitabley make him look stupid.
