| Watched the great man on Sky tv duty yesterday and thought what a loss to the game he is.
After watching our latest performance where nil was our points total we surely must approach Ellery to bring him to Belle Vue.
Watching Chris Chester I have no confidence that he alone can dig us out of this mess. We have gone backwards since John Kear left.
Chris Chester benefitted from JK's input and right now we need someone like Ellery Hanley to help him out.
With EH to help him there will be no room for players with egos bigger than their ability and in Hanley you have the perfect master of self belief and dedication that others can only aspire to.
Get him approached now as if is painful to watch the agony on Chester's face.

Each to their own but personally I don’t think he’d make any difference not is he in any way a proven coach.
No coach could save a team that loses on average 3 players again. What CC needs is to find a four leaf clover or Hanley better bring one with him.

| As you say Vastman each to is own but Hanley won the league as coach of St Helen's.
I am not suggesting he be made coach or even that with him we would win a trophy.
However what he does is bring in a mental toughness and a higher bar for setting standards.
Any young player can only be inspired by him and the more senior players will certainly improve as a result of him being around.
Suggest that anyone having doubts should watch his 2 month spell for Balmain in 1988 which had the Aussie public drooling at his class.

Tbh can only speak as I find, was coaching a team of under nines when Hanley was playing for Wigan at odsal. All kids lined up as team coach arrived, the coach and most players stopped chatted to the lads, Not the big mister more or less shoved them out of way , one of players dad asked him if he wouldn’t mind speaking to them - I can’t print his response.

There'd be no room for big egos because his would be the biggest in the room.
Didn't Cas do something similar with him a few years ago, some audiences with the great man, and I seem to remember it fizzled into nothing?
A superb player, one of the hold-your-breath players. There have been a few that make you hold your breath whenever or wherever they get the ball, because something magical might happen. Offiah, Jason Robinson, even Sam Tomkins in his early years, and Ellery was very much like that. But an audience with his ego, at great expense? Unlikely to achieve much.
As for winning the league with St Helens, isn't this the guy who coached them for one season and won it with an inherited team, at a time when there were only a couple of really good teams in the league, and then tried to claim the credit for the success of the next coach for inheriting "his" side?

That's why he'd refuse to speak to the press in his playing days, because they'd bring it up.
Fair play for turning his life around, but didn't they use to say in the eighties that Sunday afternoon in Bradford was the time that you could leave your door unlocked, because Ellery was playing?

| Hanley was a terrific player, one of the very best I’ve seen play.
His coaching record kind of sums him up though...
One year at Saints, wins it with a quality side then gets suspended and later sacked...
Goes to union...comes back to league and joins up with Cas and lasts two months, then goes to Doncaster and after just over a year packs in...not seen since in over 10 years...and he’s your saviour? Be a pretty expensive one too I’d imagine!
No thanks...

The absolute despair on his face when Bill went off injured. We have lost a player in every game post lockdown.

Oh come on I could have coached that team which he inherited, he then completely wrecked it and got sacked!
As for being a great player well that is not in doubt, however this has nothing to do with coaching at all.
Frankly giving Hanley the job would destroy the club and you’d be begging to see Chester back imho.

I too was coaching under nines at the time (wonder if we know each other ) and just wonder if you caught Ellery on the wrong day. I had several dealings with him and he seemed to go out of his way to be helpful if he could. He was unbelievably fit and strong and a great player, but as others have said not the greatest coach.

I think the comments are a bit tongue in cheek. Chill man.
