Wakefield Trinity Wildcats forward Lucas Walshaw is recovering after biting off part of his tongue in a match.

The 21-year-old second rower, who is playing on loan for Dewsbury, suffered the horrific injury during a clash of heads with a team-mate in the opening moments of the Rams' Kingstone Press Championship match at Sheffield on Sunday.

"It wasn't pretty," said Dewsbury coach Glenn Morrison. "They couldn't stop the bleeding so they got him off and then saw the end of his tongue hanging off.

"He toughed it out and spent the night in hospital where they re-attached it with about a dozen stitches.

"I've spoken to him and he says it's sore but he'll be fine. He's with the Wakefield medical staff and they are keeping us informed.

"Tongues usually heal pretty quickly so he should only be out for two or three weeks."

Walshaw, who played in Wakefield's first three matches of the First Utility Super League season before moving out on loan, will miss Dewsbury's glamour Tetley's Challenge Cup fourth-round tie against Wigan Warriors next Friday.

I suffered exactly the same injury when I were a lad - it chuffin kills and bleeds like a stuck pig.

Still, he's a tough kid, so I'm sure he won't be licking his wounds for too long.

All these jokes at the expense of Lucas are on to may taste, budding player like him could find it leaves a sour taste.

Hope Lucas is ok. As an aside, WHY is this talented young man out on loan again?
