| For anyone who doesn't like to see good sports stadia bulldozed then there's currently a petition running to try and save Don Valley. The hope is enough interest will persuade private investors to come forward and run the stadium in a manner that would make it pay its way.

| I won't be signing it. If Wakefield WMDC had spent proportionally what Sheffield have on DVS then we'd all be rightly up in arms. It's a white elephant, and always has been. I went to watch the WSG in 1991, there was nobody there then - and I would bet that there are seats at DVS that have never ever been occupied during sporting fixtures.
There's less parking than at Belle Vue, the crowd is kept a good 20m from the pitch and it has never really looked finished with swathes of seating exposed to the elements. It's staged very few athletics meets, the pitch width makes it unsuitable for soccer and Rugby League. I don't see the point of the place, and I never have. The World Student Games is a nothing event, it should never have been built.
If a fraction of the money that it has cost had been ploughed into The Eagles and other community sports projects in Sheffield then the city would be much better off 22 years on from the games (the ones that nobody remembers, or really attended in numbers).

can't believe the council are looking to save money in the way of demolishing it
this is not a purpose built stadium for football or rugby, so what if your 20 yrds away from the pitch side, this was meant to be for athletics but combines other sports and events like newmarket will for us.
on the back of a brilliant year for athletics its mind boggling to think that its going backwards by taking away good facilities which enable them to achieve like they did last year.
why is it everything has to suffer just because of saving councils budget

| It's never really attracted athletics events of any stature. It gets less than Gateshead, The Alex in Birmingham, and Crystal Palace - all of which are older I think.
It's a shame to see any venue close, but this should never have been built. I worry for Sheffield Eagles, yes I know they're playing elsewhere but they need a permanent home ideally.

| Not if we are 20 yards from the pitch, saying that if we had it moved up here we could put the odsal binos to more use.

Thats because it was never run as it should. It was criminally under promoted and as such under used by the council yet it 'only' lost them 500k a year. A private stadium company would push to have extra events there of all types, not just athletics meets. And there has never been any sponsorship of it to help plug the gap. It could work if run correctly.

No but Castleford are already trying to pick the bones of it by looking to take the main stand to Wheldon Road.
