A few thoughts after tonights game:

Our defensive structures on last tackle kicks were shambolic.I have no desire to watch them through again but one stands out in particular where Cockayne was completely isolated and had three Bulls players around him.
Goalkicking -- Get it sorted Agar, you were aware we had no recognised kicker but still continued to sign other players, the buck stops with you on this one.
Subs - In the game now where theres only ten interchanges why select Trout and then not introduce him until 17 minutes to go with the game lost.Waste of a bench spot.
We lack composure on attack.

In essence i thought tonight it was our last tackle defense and lack of compsure on attack that cost us the game.Bradford were average, nothing more. They were hanging on until the Whitehead interception. They then spotted our utterly dire our kick defense was and made us pay.

I dont want to see wholesale changes, but think a bit of tinkering is required with the team after tonight.

Personally i dont see what Washbrook has offered as a loose forward, start Ellis at 9 and push Aiton to LF.
Get Smith to mix it up a bit more,i dont feel he actually takes the line on enough.
I also think we need to start seeing something from Mellars, maybe time to push Mathers into centre and bring Tony in at full back.

Somebody watched the Hull KR tapes and our left lateral weakness! Hats off to Potter and his puppet.

I thought the game was ours to be won in the first half, but when Aiton broke through and passed into touch, it was the start of the rot for me. That was our chance to put daylight between us and Bradford and kick on. Instead we were playing dumb rugby and gave them the lead at half time.

The defence on BJ's kicks was dire. The ball was floating over and there didn't appear to be a white shirt in sight.

Goal kicking is a massive problem for me. I don't know how long we can carry on trying to convince ourselves that the team have got the confidence to score when they run the ball on a penalty. I think it's more of a case of not having the confidence to kick for goal. The goal kicking clearly hasn't been thought about. Goal kicking is the difference between being in the game and being well and truly out of it when you're trailing by a couple of scores. At 12 behind, 2 tries and 2 goals is achievable by most teams. With no goal kicker you're looking at having to score 3 tries.

The team just haven't clicked yet. I'm sure when they do, games like tonight will be won and not frustratingly lost.

Agree and one of the big problems tonight is that when we were put under pressure or things didn't go our way, there was that certain something missing in the side, that you only get by playing together regularly, that composure, calmness and confidence went missing that you'd find if the team had been together for a couple of years and they just ended losing their heads.
It's a bit infuriating because they created enough chances especially in the first half but they lacked that last pass or key right decision. Even in the disappointing second half they came out strong and scored first and towards the end they nearly scored a brilliant try created by Lauititi, before it got brought back wrongly again for a froward pass.
The discipline was awful and also the defensive set on the last, defending the kick wasn't up to scratch but I still believe the more they play, the better they'll get and when they do play they look a very good side.
Like others have said maybe a little tinkering is needed before we find our best starting 13.

There were just two things we had to do tonight to win the game. Stop Jeffries from kicking the ball, and then make sure we catch it. Without Jeffries, I'm not sure the game would have gone the same way. For each kick, it seemed like there was only ever one white shirt within yards of it, and we attacked each ball with no conviction at all. BJ had so much time for each one he could place them, and to be fair to him, it was a kicking masterclass. Each one right on the try line.

Dont want to be picky Slugger.....but isnt that one thing. If we had stopped BJ kicking it,we wouldnt have had anything to try and catch. icon_wink.gif

Thank you. icon_biggrin.gif I shall be more specific.

There were two things we had to do tonight to win the game, either of which would have sufficed:
1. Stop Jeffries kicking the ball
In the event that Jeffries did in fact kick the ball:
2. Catch it.

That okay for you, pedant. icon_biggrin.gif

The jeffries kicks wouldnt have happened had we not allowed them 50-60 metres every set of 6 even though the majority of their runs were from acting half. Last night we had the worst effort from the markers ive ever seen.

First half was ok and we should really have gone in with a lead.
Second half, not being able to prevent/ defend their one attacking option (Jeffries kicks) cost us the game. I cant believe that a very poor Bradford side can do that to us.
As a team we lost our heads in the second period and, by conceedind so many penalties we didnt see the bell for almost half an hour.
They scored 4 tries from kicks and one interception, not exactly classic RL, but it won them the game.
Why we didn't fix some cover in defence after they had scored from the Jefferies kicks I really do not know.
Our own kicking at goal is embarrassing, there are better goalkickers playing in U14's that we have, Icannot believe that within the squad there are not 2 or 3 better kickers that John.
I know we have to give the guy chance, but we are going backwards in that department.

Its not about giving people a chance, the fact is he can't kick, not saying he wanted to be the kicker and maybe he's just doing his best, but he can't kick. Still if we carry on like last night we don't really need a kicker.

If silly penalties had not been given away on 4th and 5th tackles Bulls wouldn't have got near the try line so Jeffries wouldn't have ball in hand.simple......discipline and defence wins games. eusa_wall.gif

EXACTLY! we gave the Bulls more than a helping hand to win this game. We need to get smart quick or more heavy defeats will follow!

Stan, thats how Bradford like to play and have done for years, Diskin is very good at attacking that way with the big forwards running of him, its not rocket science to concentrate on shutting this down but it seems we didn't know that.
