| It says in todays Wakey Express that Tescos are planning to take over the old sainsburys site and build a new Tesco Extra in Wakefield. It's such a shame that we couldnt have put this together in some way to get us a new ground, like Warrington, St Helens and in some ways Wigan have done...Tesco's wanting a site in Wakefield could have taken over Belle Vue or built a new store on land at silkwood park or wherever along with a new stadium for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats... anyway it will be good to have something on the sainsburys site because lots of wakefield is now looking derelict after trinity walk and other business going bust!!

| In my mind i've always liked the old Sainsbury's site for a new stadium. It might be a little bit of a tight squeeze with respect to land take, but its in the centre of town, impossible to ignore and close to both train stations with the bus station not much further.
Going back to the topic, as far as I knew Sainsbury's were holding onto the lease to prevent Tesco moving in.

| ahhh hillards.
that takes me back
i remember the grey concrete floors and the general poor lighting.
i also remember that there were only about 5 checkouts, but you never queued that long (or it didn't seem it)
in comparison, the new sainsburys is slightly different.........but you can't take away memories like hillards.

| Part of the deal that the council struck with Sainsbury's to get them to move to Trinity Walk was that no other supermarket could move on to the Ings Road complex.
Because of this deal if Tesco try and go on the site I would imagine there would be a large legal battle.

| I remember riding the trolley over that big hump in the floor of the last aisle.
I think Belle Vue would be deemed as the wrong place for a supermarket in much the same way as Wheldon Rd is.

| Tesco bought Hillards and immediately set about closing the stores that didn't have the capacity to be converted to Tesco stores. I was part of the team that wound down the Wakefield Hillards, which was a strangely emotional experience, since I remember going there on the bus from Lupset with my Mum, for the Friday big shop.

| tescos used to be in where wilkos is now didn't they. there's no way on earth that sainsbury's would have moved from ings road to their new home if tescos were going to take it. it would make no business sense whatsoever for them.
personally i think that wakefield already has enough supermarkets and is very well served by them and has a good variety too. not sure what tesco has to offer above what is already there.

Pretty sizeable Tesco's in Hemsworth, it's not too bad when the local chavs are still in bed. Bloody Asda in Durkar could do with another exit.

| Seeing as though we're having a stroll down memory lane, anyone remember Hitchins? seem to remember it was on the springs somewhere on about 3 levels, everything sold out of boxes.
Every visit to Wakey, involved being dragged around there!!!!
