I think he looked like a player that has spent considerable time out of the game! He looks like he has bulked up a fair bit and played in the back row for most of the his stint.

| He put his hand up to take a drive when whenever we were stuck in our redzone, nothing outstanding and few mistakes. He'll get sharper with more game time. Good Luck to him

| The main issue was whether Motu was fit enough for the job.
He looked 'sprightly' to me and I was most encouraged!

| Without wanting to drift the thread, and at the risk of going over old ground, surely this sort of signing (regardless of the performance on Sunday) is exactly what we should be getting ourself away from - and makes a bit of a mockery of our buy British policy. Is there really no alternative out there to an ageing import? How much time do you reckon we have spent scouring:
Our youth setup
Other teams A team
Other teams youth setup
Rugby union
Co-op 1
No disrespect, he was a decent player for Hull FC in his prime and I appreciate he has played 1 game only - its not about Motu Tony (substitute for Smith if you like) but the wider point.
Adult discussion welcomed, thought it would make a change from the usual guff about the ground.....

Fair point indeed - and if we had managed to compete with other sides and been able to retain some of our own produce from recent years, then we would have less reliance on these type of players.
I do think though that we need these type of experienced players to balance up the large number of younger players we have currently and the reality is that we struggle to compete for the home grown players - so we end up with overseas ones.
The trick now is to try and keep the young ones we now have, but to do so requires referencing the stuff you'd rather not discuss in this thread - so I won't!

| I think we have a lot of youngsters this year and so to put a 'seasoned' player in will be helpful.

I agree, we need players like Tony, King, Rinaldi and Morrison who have the experience to pass on to the younger element of the squad.
If we did just have young British players, i am sure some people would be complaining that we lack experience.

I both appreciate and understand the problem we have attracting "talent" and whilst not wanting to turn this into another BV/Newmarket/Cas/Glashouton thread I know the 2 matters are linked.
I reckon we are screwed stadium wise (short term at the very least) so may as well try to make ourselfe more attractive on other fronts. On field perfomance wise we both know we are up against things and its going to take a huge effort to be competitive and get near the play offs - so I reckon we may as well go down the London route and pack the side with 'homegrown' players. OK, we are going to take our fair share of hammerings along the way, but we probably will even with the mediocre imports - so may as well try put as many fed trained out there as we can.
If it means going into the season without Smith and tony (and maybe 1 more import) then so be it - they aren't likely to be world beaters so we may as well try use their money for either 1 quality signing or 3 home grown lads and at least appear to be playing the game and reduce from 9/10 imports by 2 or 3. This on top of shedding Latu, JD, Blanch and Leano would be a real good start to getting rid of our reputation for journeyman imports.

"Seasoned" yes - take your point.
"Imports" thats the key here.

Tony Adds little
King No issues, solid performer and Brit
Rinaldi Fed trained I understand? (It is confusing though, so could be wrong). Again, no issue.
Moro Moot point, can appreciate the comment.
If it was the above in isolation I would think you have an argument, but you forgot to add Smith, Korkidas, Obst, Henderson et al.

Completely agree with what you are saying. I understand the points TRB makes in that established, experienced Federation trained players are out of the clubs prices range, but it still disappoints me with the amount (and quality) of overseas players at the club.
A while back I put a team up with only 4 of the overseas players in the 17 man match day squad and compared it to one with all 9 (at the time Parker was still contracted to the club). IMO The club could perhaps lose Smith, Tony, Jeffries and Henderson (a player I admire for the 100% effort he puts into the game) and be only slightly worse off.

French players now count as a Federation trained players, as they should’ve been in the first place. It was a crazy decision to effectively only allow Catalans to field French players.

Obst Hendo and Korky have all been over in this country now that if they wanted to they could become British citizens and to me this makes them almost home grown players in my eyes (Yes i know that they are not classed as home grown even if they do have British citizenship).
As for Smith, he is classed as one of our four overseas players so i have no problem with us filling up our quota space.
