As I was at a bit of a loose end this afternoon I decided to take a ride and have a look at what, as a kid, we always knew as Grasmere playing fields on Batley Road, Flanshaw. The playing fields are still there lying between Flanshaw beck and the new ALDI store on Batley Road. I spent quite some time studying them and came to the conclusion that they would be a very good location for a new 12,000 capacity community stadium. Allowing for a minimum 100m length pitch, the ground could be accommodated in either N/S or E/W orientation, with adequate spectator space on all four sides, and still space left over for parking. Traffic egress onto the main road would be a little restrictive, but a set of lights may ease that problem. There are currently two sets of football goal posts in place so any club that uses the facilities would be able to transfer their games to the new community stadium.
As I recall the land used to be in the ownership of Wakefield City Council; so whether that has now passed to WMDC or WDH I don't know. Knowing the situation these days the land is probably ear marked for about 350 new houses, I suppose.
I would suggest to anybody passing to just pull up and have a look and I would like to see your thoughts on here.

Sorry mate, another total non-starter for me purely on the grounds of access. The nearest available motorway junction is junction 40 and then down through Silkwood Park and Flanshaw Lane - can you imagine the congestion down there ??

It's not right good on Regent St, Sugar Lane or Donny Road is it?

The land opposite the new Ossett Fire Station was always my first choice. Perfik. But of course, I'm not in charge and I don't own the land or have any money to purchayse it.

I think Balne Lane fields would be a good location walking distance from City centre parking train/bus station. Access? don't see the problem I've been to plenty of football and RL grounds that have less access the actual site is bigger than you think. Got told last night there's a council meeting next week or week after about stadium.

EVENTUALLY, WE'LL WIN SOMETHING, ,MAYBE, IF I'M STILL ALIVE THEN:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_31007.jpg

There's no point in talking about any location as it would require millions of pounds and traffic problems resolving, and would take an age to get through the council, and the funding would break down.

In reality, the only option for a quick fix, and that is what we need, is a tarted up Belle Vue, stand by stand, as everything is already in place. New main stand with corporate. Then bulldoze the flats and put an away stand there. Improve the terracing on west and north stands and a roof on the west. Done.
