Not sure.
I recalll going to Wakefield Theatre Club for a Wakefield Trinity Christmas Party for the juniors. All the players were there. I think may have co incided with a Toppos testimonial year.
Think it was around 79-80

When it was the Theatre Club my auntie worked there and got to meet all the stars.
She even got me a signed picture of Mud once!
When it was Pussy Cats, a couple of my brother's mates served behind the bar in their brightly coloured boiler suits!
Unfortunately I'm too young to remember such high jinx!

Pity that because them were what you call nights out not like today  oh to be young again  I saw Bernard Manning at the old Theatre Club, great night but wouldn't get away with it today Freddie Starr was the best.  |

Saw Tommy Cooper at Theatre Club. Took him about 5/6 blundering minutes to get on stage and through curtains. By then everyone was laughing hysterically My sides really were hurting. Then following absolute mayhem as he somehow finished his act. What a comedian !

Pretty much it.
As a matter of interest the reason Trinity built a clubhouse/social club that large was that they intended it to be a Sydney style Leagues club with slots, casino and other facilities for members. Sadly the expected law change never happened (and still hasn't) and it became a huge white elephant. Imagine if that cash had been spent on a new main stand
This who dare wins attitude proved to be something of an on going issue with the wallies who ran the club as a few years later the perfectly serviceable South stand (also the newest) was knocked down to make way for a supermarket that never materialised! Talk about never learning. |
