| Since there has been discussion on different threads;
I think we need more of a direct 6, someone to take on the line as we already have a great passer and organiser in Smith.
i was looking at a few options, dont shoot me down as been unrealistic as these are only ideas and i dont know what budget we would be allocating to this position.
Brett Kearney
Rhys Hanbury
Aaron Heremia
Rob burrow (Can play 6)
Lee Breirs is also off contract and i cant see Warrington resigning him in all honesty, with other young players shining in the halfs, would definetly add an old head to the team but im not sure if that is what we are looking for.
i havent looked at the overseas OOC List so im not sure whos available.
Anyone have any other ideas?

The difficulty of course being that there are now two more clubs with money to spend and as Hull FC found out last year, quality hb's are like hen's teeth; with the exception of Heremia, who has been patchy at best, the others on that list, if available, are likely to head to cashed up clubs.
I think we may have to look closer to home - Lee Smith could be a good option, with a full off and pre-season training in the role; he's got lots of experience, reads the game well and is a strong runner.
Aside from that, I think we'll struggle to bring in an established player - we can't compete in the marketplace.

| Indeed.
We are either going to have to settle for a kid on the way up or an old man on the way down.
I'd be quite happy with Briers but he's got a coaching role now.
I've previously mentioned Richard Horne
Lee Smith kind of comes in to this category and i think he is a good option to us.
The alternative is getting a kid who has a running game but probably can't cntrol the game yet. Like Myler was a couple of years ago.
Can't tell you who but Leeds have a couple of lads that come in to this category.
Can't see them letting them go but a loan might be on.

| you guys have hit the nail on the head here I feel.
Cas signed Jamie Ellis last eyar, which I still believe to be a fantastic signing. Getting a young half back of a sound quality is really tough - especially for clubs with our profile.
The fickle fans who bash Jamie need to remember that a few years ago our marquee signing was Brent Sherwin. What a player he was in the NRL!!!! came to cas and was gash.
To me, this is adequate proof that young half backs are DEFINITELY the way to go, not old ones on the way out.
I'd rather have a poor young 'un than a poor old 'un.
that's what a coach is there for.
....also, the good thing about wakefield's squad is, albeit small, many of the back's can fill in anywhere from 1-6....
mathers, smith, cockayne, sykes....

I was going to float that one, but didn't want to provoke the usual argument - he's more divisive than Thatcher!
I've said before that I think he'd be a good option at 6 - the strongest part of his fb play is his ability to join the line as a pivot and early season, his stats for try assists were impressive.
Either way, I think we'll need to be creative - I don't see us being a particularly big player in the transfer market.

| Not sure Mathers has a good enough kicking game to play in the halves but the Lee Smith option could woek. Maybe play him there this weekend and see how he goe.

| With the lack of quality half backs I can see us going with a player from the squad we have.It would certainly be worth seeing how things could pan out by trying it this weekend.
