| the other day my lad turned his ankle in a game and aggravated a previous strain done before xmas, while we did the proper precautions after the game it was still sore and we took advice just to see that nothing was broken,
luckily everything seemed alright until 4 days later he turned it again walking home from school, needless to say we went down the same path but this has now become a more serious problem, he's got it in a strap and he's now waiting hopefully for mri scan to find how much damage has been to his ligament.
it could be just badly sprained but with the extra movement of the ankle it doesn't look to good,
has anyone had a similar injury and how did you cope with it and how did the rehab go to get you back into the game?

| Have you told him to watch where he's going?!
Bloody kids - such clumsy gets; I lost count of how many we had on the bench last season due to clumsiness/stupidity related incidents; one of our big forwards broke his arm jumping on the bloody sofa!
Hey ho - I hope he makes a speedy recovery Snowie; good thing about kids I suppose is that they do tend to bounce back more quickly than us old crocks.

I think the damage was done previously and this was just waiting to give way

| I did something similiar when I was younger, went over on my ankle and the arch of my foot almost touched my leg.
I hobbled about for about 6 weeks & couldn't really train anything lower body for 3-4 months. I'd say I made a full recovery, but even now (15 years later) the ankle occasionally gives way for no reason. Funnily enough, it gives way more when I'm walking than doing any kind of training!
I haven't played rugby in a few years now, but I've just left the army after 11 years in the infantry, regularly walking/running over uneven ground while carrying silly amounts of weight.
I expect he'll be fine given a bit of time & proper rest.

Aye, good shout; Lee patched up quite a few of our lads last season and for a very reasonable rate. He certainly understands rugby injuries!

Sad to say I had the same experience as a 19 year old, turned the ankle 3 times in a couple of months and ended up not playing for a whole season... I also lost several yards of pace... I think much of the problem was i tried to do too much too quick... even in normal every day activity.
thankfully that was my last injury until I tore my ACL aged 35... both injuries still cause me problems.
my advice is dont rush the recovery.

he did a fantastic with him when he landed on his knee once, he had 4 days to get him ready for a final from a swollen knee unable to walk to him at least getting on for half the game

Cant remember which injury Jordan had Snowie,he's had that many,he was told to apply heat for 10 mins then ice every couple of hours then the rest obviously. We found the clubs phisio,Neal, was very helpful. What ever the treatment he has Jordan and myself wish Louis a speedy recovery.

| I underwent a full ankle reconstruction at around the same age. Compound fracture and ligaments shot to bits.
Rest is crucial until you know what is wrong with it, and assuming it is nothing too serious he will be given a number of exercises to do. I don't want to say he should do this or that exercise because I do not know what he has done, but I would suggest he keeps the rest of his body active where possible as this will ensure blood flow to the affected ankle. Plenty of core work etc.
I would also expect he will be given a resistance band to use to build up the strength in it.
Has he recently been through a noticeable growing spirt?

| I had a similar episode in my late teens. Started in a run of the mill game, rolled my ankle. Usual thing, didn't let it recover fully, didn't give the physio enough time to get rid of the scar tissue and returned to playing within a couple of weeks or so, strapping with stirrups. As I protected the joint whilst playing I was OK, but I rolled it 2-3 times over the next 18 months or so, each time the ankle would swell terribly and bruise black and purple.
Got referred to the specialist at Huddersfield RI who told me the scar tissue had never healed and as a result my ankle was shot as the lateral ligament couldn't react quickly enough to stabilize the joint whenever I stood on uneven ground for example, but whilst I was playing and was strapped up, the stirrups did the work instead.
I had a full reconstruction, a Brorstrom Procedure. Spent around 8 weeks in plaster, 3 months in physio etc at Huddersfield.
I never really got back to playing, only a scattering of games spread over a few seasons. The joint has been fairly stable since, but I have rolled it a couple of times when either exercising with no strapping or walking, my confidence is also low on the joint and I have over compensated with my gate putting extra stress elsewhere.
My advice would be to take as long as it needs as once the damage was done in my case it has never been the same since.

| thanks Jonh and musky for your insight into your injuries, it goes without saying that we are taking things by the book and listening to what he's been told,
there's no way I'm I willing to risk any evolvement in any exercise that can set him back, in fact this could effect his grade in PE at school as 50% of the marks are physical activities.
I'll be keen to hear his results form his mri scan if we have missed an earlier strain.
he doesn't seem to have had any growth spurt Jonh but he has a big frame at 6' 3" and has had problems with his back, the club found that he had 20mm difference in leg length, he now wears a 10mm wedge which helps with his posture and has made a difference to his stride when running.
its a massive disappointment as we have seen his confidence return getting two tries on the game he was injured and was getting back to the lad I used to know.

| Get notes from the doctors and he can do the physical side of his PE exam at a later date (if he hasn't recovered by then). I forgot to mention that in my post earlier!
