I always find it strange just how much that era means to so many fans, myself included.
I mean if you think BV is bad now!
The team was never really very good, gritty and effective but totally lacking as entertainers. We didn't score many and wingers were virtually unnecessary.
We sold every decent player we created, even when many wanted to stay.
BV had no atmosphere, no cover and no facilities at all, we didn't even own the upstairs of Cats bar.
We were far more of a basket case then than now, yet I loved that era.
The only reason I can come up with was the state of the game itself. It was still largely semi-pro, P&R was 2 up 2 down so all clubs felt they had a chance to get in the top league of which if I recall had 16 teams? I never felt the game was rigged then, there was an RL family and the game did belong to the fans.
For us, defeat was more common than victory but it was rarely by a blowout scoreline, many games were tight and of course the whether played a big part. I suppose it was the last glimpse for most of us of what is now a lost world, a bit morbid but hey.
