There's a difference between what a player is worth and what a club is able to pay. For instance, during the Leeds recent glory years it was commonly acknowledged that the players could have got more elsewhere but wanted to stay at Leeds.
A player is worth whatever someone will pay for him. Wakey's value will be about how much they can afford to pay balanced against the impact of paying more on recruitment and pay elsewhere. If someone else will pay more, he is worth more, but not to Wakey, due to the effect on the spending elsewhere. MC might agree that he'd like to pay him more, but feels he can't because it will affect other recruits.
If he gets a better deal elsewhere, he clearly will be worth more than what Wakey could offer. If not, he isn't. I'd like to see him stay, particularly now Brough is coming to the end of his career, and he's the best of the alternatives in that position, but available funds are available funds.
