Quote bren2k="bren2k"In the 80's, the whole Wakey scene became focused on Westgate - and it was a draw for people from all over the country; I had nights out then where you literally couldn't get a drink in some places it was so busy; happy days. Go there now before 11pm and it's virtually dead - with kids arriving in taxis to go clubbing til the early hours. So it goes.'"
I didn't start going out on Westgate until the late 1990s and it was still really busy then. We used to get off the bus from Normy on Kirkgate and walk up the precinct just to feel the full effect of emerging at the top end of Westgate to flashing lights, booming speakers and what looked like 20,000 people! On a Friday and Saturday night it would be packed from as early as 6pm right up to 3am and beyond. Cars could hardly drive up the road for the mass of people. I started to notice a massive decline at the turn of the century, in fact everything just seemed to turn to rubbish overnight after the much hyped Millennium!
The last time I was sat in the Pie Shop on a Friday night looking out over Westgate it was 01.49am. I had to take a photo to send to one of my old drinking partners as I don't think he'd have quite believed it in just a text.
