Although Powell didn't last too long as Leeds coach, his situation probably shows that it is far better for young, aspiring coaches to ply their trade outside the top flight and then take on a SL club when they have "perfected" the art of coaching.
Far too many ex players start coaching at the top level only to drop down one or two divisions and then they return and are massively improved. Powell is a good example of this.
Also, when a player is given the top job, straight from playing for that team, it usually falls a bit flat and perhaps Cunningham, at Saints, falls into this category.
Webster has the makings of a decent coach but, Wakefield on a shoestring budget wasn't the time or place for him, although, when he took over from Agar, he certainly improved performance and of course, started last season ok. He just struggled when we began losing and made some bad errors along the way. Like writing the regular season off, after less than half the games had been played.
It's fair to say that, he wouldn't do that again.
