Don't think the tickets can be refered to as being subsidised. The idea is that they generate more interest and therefore more income.
Also, regarding home supporters, when people turn up in advance to purchase tickets from the shop they also have a look at merchandise.

I was in Tesco Barnsley yesterday in a Wakey shirt the checkout lady told me her family and herself were Sheffield Utd fans who were fed up with football and had got season tickets to watch Wakefield for this season after watching on sky last year.
