I would add a couple of issues into the mix which may not have a direct effect, but which do colour the back-ground:
One is the stadium - especially the let-down of Thornes Park. Many of us feared that it was only a matter of time before dropped off the face of the earth at that time. This was at a point when season tickets are normally sold and that, together with a relative lack of new signings, did not 'inspire' our support base.
Two is the loss of Adam / Leon and other sad issues. The club, and it's fans, may have won much appreciation for their efforts in this, but I cannot help but feel that being connected to such sadness is not condusive towards selling tickets - nor does it seem relevant either!
So, added to the credit crunch, I feel that we have not done too badly overall, but I do know that it has made life difficult for the BoD and they have had to juggle a little to get around it all.
So the message going forward now is very much 'onwards and upwards' and let's have a bit of fun around the place once more!
