1969 Challenge Cup second round and we drew Bradford Northern away. Unfortunately for Northern we were in the middle of a deep freeze and the Odsal pitch remained frozen for so long they were ordered to play the game at Headingley which had a heated pitch at that time.
Playing for Bradford at the time was Berwyn Jones, the fastest man in R.L. who had moved from Wakefield under "unfortunate circumstances" allegedly, and there was no love lost between him and Trinity. Midway through the second half, with Bradford trying to clear their own line, the ball reached Jones who had eighty yards to go and the defence queuing up to greet him. Three solid attempts were made to tackle him and all three were beaten by sheer speed down the outside. The final forty yards or so were covered in solitary splendour and he finished the run with a glorious swallow dive in the corner. In his eagerness to humiliate Trinity he had, of course, omitted to run behind the sticks, and on a windy and bitterly cold night the coversion attempt was too much for Phillips and the game ended in a draw 7 - 7, with Trinity winning the replay 10 - 0.

Quote: chissitt "Not sure mate but I think you might have got that game mixed up with the top 4 play off final against St Helens at Headingley on the Saturday. That game was drawn 7 -7 I think, and we went on to win the midweek replay'"

No mate I'm talking about the 69 second round cup tie against Bradford which was played at Headingley.

Quote: hyperion "Check the records mate, the '69 tie against Northen was played at Headingley. Also, Joe Bonnar catching Berwyn Jones? you're having me on, BJ was a world class sprinter, Joe Bonnar would need a motor bike to catch him.
The game I am talking about happened at BV, as I said in my previous post it could just be possible we are talking about different games. I have never implied that Bonnar was faster than Jones what I said was that with him giving chase from further in field than Jones he headed him off and made him go into the corner so that he could not go under the sticks. Had he tried to Bonnar would have caught him is that clear enough. Although I do get things wrong from time to time I certainly can tell the difference between BV and Headingley.

Regards

Quote: TRB "You just put that on there didn't you???
While trying to help with your project about rugby clubs' I got involved with an issue regarding who we signed Joe Bonnar from. It appears that not for the first time in my life I have got something wrong it probably wont be the last either. For some reason you and the other poster seem to find it amusing, when you have finished laughing just spare a thought for me. For the last forty years I have been under the impression that we got Bonnar from Workington only to find out we actually got him from 7 mile down the road at Whitehaven. This news has totally devastated me and I am left wondering how I am going to cope with life. I suppose I will just have to take it 1 day at a time.
