The Northern Rail Cup takes on a new format for 2009 with all English-based Co-operative Championship and Championship 1 clubs having been divided into two pools with five teams from each division in each pool. Each team plays two home and two away games against teams in their pool. The top four in each pool then progress into an open draw for the quarter final and semi final knockout stages.
