apparently about 300 turn out for the home games which isn't too bad considering the level they play at and the inclement (being mega polite !) weather... d040.gif

well done Spurs and good luck to the Gooners tonight icon_biggrin.gifANCE:

I think me & wz are straying off the 'scottish football' thread a bit - so to get back on it before we get reprimanded maybe I can bemoan the fact that there are no scots involved the Spurs & Gooners teams ! the only exception being Joe Jordan maybe - just think of all the great scots to have played in north London over the years ? anyone remember the likes of Gilzean,Mackay, McClintock & Armstrong to name but a few - what's happened to all the great scottish players ??

A purple patch inspired on his home ground by man of the match WIGAN CAPTAIN Sean O’Loughlin produced three tries in an eight-minute spell just before half-time, and the GB Lions added two more after the break to maintain Smith’s 100 per cent record as Great Britain coach. Sat 27th April 2002 St Helens 12 Wigan 21 Edinburgh - Sat 4th May 2002 Celtic 2 Rangers 3 Glasgow (Carlsberg dont do weeks, but if they did.....) //www.internationalrugbyleague.net/:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_36409.jpg

if you remember (i dont as i was born in 76) Arsenal signed Peter Marinello from Hibs in 1970 for 100k which was a record then, he made his debut for Arsenal in an away match at Old Trafford and promptly scored in a 2-1 win.. then his life got taken over by the press as he was the new Georgie Best, unfortunately it didnt work out for him and he ended up in America and latterly Motherwell and Airdrie.. the ale got the better of him unfortunately, what a player though? i read his book and it was an amazing read.

Scottish players are beginning to show up in Englands top flight now, though not at the standard of the 70s and 80s but Darren Fletcher, Charlie Adam, Graham Dorrans and Barry Ferguson are cult heroes at their respective clubs so not all bad..

yes,of course, little Alfie who was a big hit at WHL but a really scruffy git with long hair which made him look a real mess, especially alongside the immaculately looking scot Jimmy Robertson who was a quick winger and a great Spurs servant.
Watched Marinello play a few times and he was indeed called the new George Best - flattered to deceive IMO - didn't realise he wrote a book, must find it.
Another good scots player in the same mould tho' a bit later was Frank McAvennie at WHU who I thought was better than Marinello - he did have his fair share of off-field problems tho'.........
Loads of great scots of the same era ie Bremner,Lorimer,Dalglish,Denis the Menace, Graham,Macari etc etc etc too many to list.......

great days indeed icon_cheers.gif

Marinello's book is called 'Fallen Idle' should get it on amazon for about 3 or 4 quid idve thought.. one of the best autobiographies ive read.

Im no sure if Mcavennie was in Marinello's class.. but, Mcavennie was great at west ham in the 86/87 season with Cottee (the year there was no tv on football) and Frankie boy was great for the rebels too. Must have been terrible for him in London spending all his brass on hookers and hob nobbing with Peter Stringfellow lol, a character to this day.

Shame those days are gone, i could talk for hours on that subject. Dont forget Ray Houghton is Glaswegian thro and thro (dunno what all that playing for ireland crap is all about).

Ray Stewart, Steve Nicol, Gary Gillespie, David Speedie, Brian McClair.. all great with their clubs but rotten in a Scotland shirt icon_frustrated.gif

just ordered the book on ebay at £2.99 free p & p so that's a good deal - I look forward to reading it very soon
yeh,all the lads you mentioned were good players but they will never go down as 'greats' like Dalgleish,Gilzean,Macari & even Jordan etc you also had the same quality of good players like Brazil,Archibald,Gough,Duncan at Spurs etc but going way back I would loved to have seen John White who died tragically in 1964 (remember the day !)
According to my mate who played against him for Wolves in 1963 ish,he reckons he was brilliant and impossible to mark, hence his nickname of 'Ghost'
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_White ... rn_1937%29

just browsing through the LUFC pst scots the list includes - Bremner,Lorimer,Mcallister , Collins,Harvey,Jordan,Gray & Strachan decent players methinks...

re - McAvennie,he was a class act and made goal scoring lokk easy at times - Marinello had more class but couldn't live with the image IMO - couldn't handle it maybe ? i'll tell you after i've read the book.

We might as well throw Rioch, Masson, and Gemmill into the midfield mix as well.

When Archie scored that beauty against the Dutch in Argentina 78 things went fooking ballistic in our household. icon_biggrin.gif

Red Amber and Black Fantasy Rugby League Champion 2012. Interesting debate here lads, good work. It is good to read some good debate about the Scottish game without the usual...

1. abuse about how crap it is, and
2. it degenerating into an Old Firm slanging.

It is true enough about the Scots in England these days and whilst we certainly do not produce the standard that we used to do it is beginning to look a bit more promising.

From the top of my head we have (and I include plastic jocks that are eligible for us these days.)

Man United - Darren Fletcher
Tottenham - Allan Hutton
Sunderland - Phil Bardsley, Craig Gordon
Birmingham - Barry Ferguson, James McFadden
Villa - Barry Bannan
West Brom - Graham Dorrans, James Morrison
Wigan - S Caldwell, G Caldwell, J McArthur (and McCarthy if he could decide what country he is from!)
Blackpool - Charlie Adam, Matt Gilks, Stephen Crainey
Wolves - Steven Fletcher, Christophe Berra
Blackburn - Grant Hanley
Liverpool - Danny Wilson

We also have the likes of.....

QPR - Jamie Mackie
Leeds - Robert Snodgrass
Cardiff - Chris Burke, Kevin McNaughton and David Marshall

Operating atthe top of the Championship plus of course we own Middlesborough too.

OK, there is some e in that but it is a lot more encouraging for us to see so many players operating in a top league.

Plus of course we have a few managers!
