| Now we just need him to come out of retirement, spear-heading a 4-3-3 with Owen and Martins just behind him.

In 1935 The Dragon Slayers as they were known defeated Canterbury bulldogs 91-6, which is still the biggest win in the Club's History. In 1907, the St George district had a club in the Sydney rugby union competition. Interestingly, the team's area was referred to as the 'Illawarra suburbs'. A resolution to form a St George rugby league club was made at a local meeting held in early 1908, but the movement faltered and collapsed. St George, wearing the district colours of red and white, played in the NSWRL's Third Grade competition in 1910, and formed a President's Cup team in 1911. References were found at the time to district teams being called 'The Saints'.the perfect 11

| Quote: PAUL M "Very strange decision by Shearer
well if it lifts the team / club / city to get three or so wins over the last few games it is job done in the short term and likely survival - his status is further cemented and he is in the box seat for negotiating (if he wants) the terms for a longer deal.
if they go down , he inherited a bottom 3 team 8 games to go, not his fault.
Financially i assume it would be a disaster for them though.

| There are only 2 appointments that would recieve the reaction, Keegan or Shearer.
Ashley has tried one, lied to him and he has walked.
Shearer won't take any s*it either, will he listen to Kinnear and want Kinnear acting above him on transfers, will he bollox.
Shearer won't be made a fool of.
Shearer will want control of everything that a manager should be in control of, and they should give it to him if they want him to stay.

| Quote: OoOGazOoO "Oh jeez im not sure what to make of this to be honest.
He's in a no lose situation i guess, lots of people expect us to get relegated, if we do, then nothing changed, if we stay up, then everyone will be happy.
I just think it's not the right time for him.
Saying that, i would rather have him as the manager. Someone who knows Newcastle, knows the club, loves the club, rather than people like Hughton, Kinnear, Calderwood, etc...'"
I think it is exactly the right time for him and a very shrewd move on his part.
Previously he has distanced himself from the position. At this point in time the club are in turmoil, sitting in the relegation zone and rumours of discontent are frequent.
So, the hero that is Alan Shearer comes in with 8 games to go in a no lose situation. If Newcastle survive it enhances his already god-like status on Tyneside. If Newcastle go down it is not his fault due to the position the club were in when he took over.
I don't believe he will take the job full time next season (If Newcastle survive) unless he gets assurances about transfer funds available and further assurances concerning the running of the club and team affairs.
If Newcastle get relegated he may well stay on. Newcastle are a big enough club to bounce straight back with a season of victory after victory in the Championship. Making Shearer's name accend from god-like status to Keegan-like status.

That is the issue i think, he has been quoted before in saying that he wouldnt want to be a manager under the same conditions as Keegan was, as Keegan was being undermined.
You could say it was the right time for him, for reasons as you have outlined above. However, it could be the wrong time if Ashley is going to treat him the same way he did with Keegan.

| Just when you think Newcastle couldn't get any more stupid they go and pull a stunt like this. Surely the last thing they need is a rookie manager.

Who is in Australia's group again? IIRC it's Burma, Singapore, Krakatoa and Luxembourg isn't it? Are Oz still coached by Gene Hackman?
