Can't blame the lad for bettering himself and becoming a nationwide Star, something which would never have happened had he stayed at Wigan!'"
Can't help but agree with you and not every Wigan fan is bitter against him.
The annoying thing is, he wanted to stay and would have stayed at Wigan if we'd have offered even half the money Northampton gave him. As for him only showing potential at the time and that Wigan were right to let him go, this is rubbish. The regime in charge at that time were rank amateurs compared to what happens now. IL has all our good young players wrapped up in long term contracts which reflect their potential.
In short, it was huge error letting him go but now that he has gone, I'm glad he's doing so well.

While I agree with this assessment, which incidentally is shared by IL from what he said at the last FF, it was the manner of Ashton's departure that aggravated so many people. Posing in that shirt was rank stupidity on his part, or sheer arrogance. Either way, it hardly endeared him to the Wigan fans, who at the time were trying to cope with a club in crisis.

Fair point but it gets a bit ridiculous don't you think, how some of our fans react to him. I witnessed him taking a load of abuse when he attended a Wigan game last year and he didn't react. He just looked uncomfortable and embarrassed.

In which case I'd advise he stay away from Wigan games. Several of his comments in the national press - to the detriment of Rugby League in general - haven't helped his reputation either.

I honestly don't understand the animosity to Ashton.
Compare this to Brian Carney when he left, his last few games in a Wigan shirt were a disgrace. Yet most on here look back at him as some kind of Wigan legend.

I remember plenty people being at the very least disenchanted with Brian Carney during his last season at Wigan, and in some cases expressing clear hostility towards him. The term 'Biscuit Legs' was used quite a lot during that time.
What I don't remember is him dissing Wigan and RL in general in various newspaper articles after he'd left, presumably to try and justify to himself the decision that he'd made.

Did Carney parade around in another clubs shirt SEVEN months before his contract expired?
NO NO NO NO he didnt its the biggest NO NO in world sport, may the fleas of a thousand camels infest his undercracks!!
I still can't believe there are some Wigan fans that have such short memories and seek to defend the weasel.

| I dont get how after 4 years people can still be so bitter about the lad. OK he may have done wrong before he left (most of that I feel because he was ill advised and so young) and his attitude may not have been perfect, but I bet if he found out Wigan fans still get angry when they hear his name, then he would laugh.
I'm not bothered what he does, but it does make me smile when I hear about a lad from Wigan tearing up Rugby Union, when in my opinion Sam Tomkins is a far better player and prospect and he is all ours!

I think one more crack would have knocked him out.
It will be interesting to see what the disciplinary panel make of it.
Anyone know who won?'"
Not Ashton.

| Many of the comments on You Tube from Union fans coincide with those views from Wigan fans.
Basically a big head who needs taking down a peg or two

I didn't blame Ashton for taking the money offered to him, it was the right decision for him.
I didn't really blame him for the "shirt" decision. He was young and probably ill advised.
What I will never forgive him for was his "attitude" at training. I was told by a players father at the time that Ashton would deliberately throw a bad pass and blame someone else and say "you're "
I was told this on the day that Aston was released from Wigan, not at the time he signed for Northhampton.
