I'm not sure, Mark. We'd had some poor results before it happened, then after it we had some shockers after it. We'd already drew at home with Stoke, West Ham and Fulham before it. I don't think one single act - like Rafa's rant - can have such an impact on a season. We'd had poor results before it, and poor results after it, our biggest undoing this year was the poor fitness of Torres for the first half of the season, IMO.

What was your record with Torres in comparison to without him? You were clear prior to his rant, then fell away and blew a big lead after, still to find somebody with the stones to admit it.

Remember this.

It wasn't just having Torres playing, he was in pretty poor condition for the whole of the first half of the season. He returned to top fitness not long after the Everton game in the cup. I can't be bothered going through every single teamsheet prior to the rant, but he first injured himself in the 0-0 draw away at Villa, and he never really reached top fitness until after that Everton game, which was not long after the rant. We still played well without him, but I still feel his on/off injury situation, and lack of fitness throughout the first half of the year was what cost us the most.

We were never miles ahead of United, you were in Japan and had a fair amount of games in hand, but at the end of the day, even us having one of our greatest seasons in the league wasn't enough to win the league. Although you've not fired in 6th gear all season, or for the majority of the season, you're still a lot better than us, and as it pains me to say it, you're the best side in the world, and even without the 'rant', it would have taken a hell of a lot from us to have won this league.

It's what happens though isn't it Rob, we have missed Rooney and Ronaldo in quite a few games and Rio has missed a larg chunk also, look at Chelsea with Essien and your blue friends from across stanley park, I know you're not using it as an excuse but I feel it's semthing everybody ahs to deal with.

I know it does, but I just felt that his injuries had a more telling impact on our season than Rafa's rant. As strange - and probably un-needed - as the rant was, I just can't see how a manager having a go at another manager can cost a side a league title. I'm sure Fergie's had a moan at other managers in the past, and I doubt it's cost you titles, although this won't be accurate, just a wild guess...

the suggestion at the time, rightly or wrongly was, that quite a few of the liverpool squad thought he should have just stfu - you don't really want to give fergie something to latch onto and start cranking up the seige mentality.
